{"id":429239,"date":"2025-12-06T17:31:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T17:31:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/429239\/"},"modified":"2025-12-06T17:31:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-06T17:31:16","slug":"nobel-laureate-maria-corina-machado-to-travel-to-oslo-to-receive-peace-prize-despite-threats-from-venezuelan-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/429239\/","title":{"rendered":"Nobel laureate Maria Corina Machado to travel to Oslo to receive peace prize despite threats from Venezuelan leaders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nobel laureate and Venezuelan opposition leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/nobel-peace-prize-maria-corina-machado-venezuela-opposition-leader-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Maria Corina Machado<\/a> confirmed she will travel to Norway next week to collect the honor, the head of the Nobel Institute told Agence France-Presse on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Machado, who has been living in hiding in Venezuela since the 2024 presidential election, has expressed interest in traveling to Oslo for the ceremony on Dec. 10.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was in contact with Machado last night (Friday) and she confirms that she will be in Oslo for the ceremony,&#8221; Kristian Berg Harpviken said.<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;Given the security situation, we cannot say more about the date or how she will arrive,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p> Venezuela&#8217;s attorney general, Tarek William Saab, told AFP last month that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/nobel-peace-prize-maria-corina-machado-fugitive-venezuela\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Machado would be considered a &#8220;fugitive&#8221;<\/a> if she travelled to Norway to accept the peace prize. He added that Machado is accused of &#8220;acts of conspiracy, incitement of hatred, terrorism,&#8221; and noted that she is under investigation for her support of the United States&#8217; deployment of military forces in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p>Machado was awarded the 2025\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/nobel-peace-prize-donald-trump-what-to-know\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nobel Peace Prize<\/a>\u00a0in October for &#8220;her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.&#8221; It was Venezuela&#8217;s first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/video-nobel-peace-prize-maria-corina-machado-venezuela\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nobel Prize<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Known as Venezuela&#8217;s &#8220;Iron Lady,&#8221; the 58-year-old Machado has spent more than two decades leading a political movement challenging the country&#8217;s authoritarian leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Venezuela has been ruled by an autocratic regime for decades and is currently led by President Nicolas Maduro. His\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/venezuela-nicolas-maduro-violent-repression-since-election-un-experts-say\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">election in 2024<\/a>\u00a0was widely dismissed as non-democratic.
