{"id":429545,"date":"2025-12-06T20:43:43","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T20:43:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/429545\/"},"modified":"2025-12-06T20:43:43","modified_gmt":"2025-12-06T20:43:43","slug":"how-to-interpret-naplan-results-and-what-the-data-actually-tells-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/429545\/","title":{"rendered":"How to interpret NAPLAN results and what the data actually tells you"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Australian parents had the opportunity to pour over NAPLAN results for their children&#8217;s school this week, but interpreting the data may not have been clear at first glance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA)<a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-12-03\/2025-school-naplan-results\/106073928\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106073928\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> released the latest annual test data for nearly 10,000 schools <\/a>across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Parents, principals and education enthusiasts can now search for a school on <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/myschool.edu.au\/\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the My School <\/a>website and see how it progressed in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But if making school comparisons,<strong> <\/strong>ACARA says it is important to<strong> <\/strong>understand the story behind the data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Here&#8217;s how to decipher the results and what the data does \u2014 and does not \u2014 tell you about a school&#8217;s performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Why the school profile matters<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">NAPLAN \u2014 National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy \u2014 is an annual test of students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-12-05\/news-corp-naplan-league-tables-education-leaders-open-letter\/106100742\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News Corp attacked by school leaders over NAPLAN<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Forty-one signatories to an open letter say they are &#8220;dismayed&#8221; (My School\u00a0)<\/p>\n<p>Analysing &#8216;student progress&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">NAPLAN only tests students in basic literacy and numeracy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Although it was &#8220;important information&#8221;, Mr Gniel stressed that the results were &#8220;not the be all and end all&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not everything about a school. And we always sort of say that,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">With that in mind, navigating to the &#8216;student progress&#8217; section of the portal was an intentional next step.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This is about the growth of students from within that school as opposed to the results which are their raw scores essentially against other students,&#8221; Mr Gniel said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;What we want to see, of course, is that all these kids catch up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The results were different when choosing &#8216;numeracy&#8217; (Supplied: Pasi Sahlberg)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Pasi Sahlberg, professor in educational leadership at the University of Melbourne, noted that research showed standardised tests such as NAPLAN were poor indicators of school quality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Most variation in student scores is explained by factors outside the school, especially socio-economic background, family resources, and broader community conditions,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>No alarm in seeing red\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">If a school has below average indicators, Mr Gniel said there was no cause for alarm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I always encourage people to go in and then help and see what you can do to support the school,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;What&#8217;s happening there that we can do to help?
