The <\/strong>Australian Open<\/strong><\/a> will come to a conclusion on Sunday at Royal Melbourne.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

With 18 holes remaining, home favourite Cameron Smith has teed up a glorious chance<\/a> to end a largely forgettable 2025 season on a high.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cameron Smith<\/a> fired a third-round 66 to trail leader, Denmark’s Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, by two strokes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

South Korea’s Si Woo Kim, Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz and Smith’s compatriots, Adam Scott and Min Woo Lee, are also in contention here.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Masters champion Rory McIlroy<\/a> has been the biggest attraction all week but is nine shots off the lead.\u00a0<\/p>\n

McIlroy admitted after his third round – which included a bizarre incident with a banana peel<\/a> – that he is too far adrift of the lead now to mount a challenge.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It was the second strange incident this week to involve McIlroy, with the golfer player and missing at his ball during Friday’s round.\u00a0<\/p>\n

McIlroy said it was “not one of the finer moments<\/a>” of his career.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Northern Irishman, 36, currently sits in joint 24th place.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The final round of the Australian Open begins at 7:09am local time (20:09 GMT on Saturday).\u00a0<\/p>\n

McIlroy is off early with alongside America’s Matt McCarty and Italy’s Stefano Mazzoli.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The final group of Smith, Kim and Petersen will tee off at 11:50am.\u00a0<\/p>\n
