An iconic college football rivalry gets another chapter on Saturday when No. 3 Georgia plays No. 9 Alabama in Atlanta for the SEC Championship. It’s going to be the fifth meeting between these two programs in the SEC Championship Game, which is the second-most common matchup since the conference created the title game in 1992. The rivalry has gone decidedly the Crimson Tide’s way when trophies are on the line in Atlanta, as Alabama can claim not only a 4-0 record against the Bulldogs in the SEC Championship Game but also won the 2017-18 College Football Playoff National Championship matchup — also in Mercedes-Benz Stadium.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Longer-term history aside, Kalen DeBoer has gotten off to a 2-0 start against Georgia as Alabama’s coach after leading the Crimson Tide a win in regular-season matchups last season and earlier this year. Those losses contributed to Kirby Smart’s 1-7 record against Alabama, with the only win coming in the national championship game in Indianapolis at the end of the 2021 season.\u00a0<\/p>\n
As for the matchup on the field, Georgia will look to build on what has been a resilient campaign in SEC play which saw the Bulldogs trail in seven of its eight games yet clinch a spot in the conference title game with a 7-1 record in league play. The only loss, of course, came against Alabama at home back on Sept. 27, which was a win that gave the Crimson Tide an in-road to Atlanta that was clinched with an Iron Bowl win last Saturday at Auburn.\u00a0<\/p>\n
These two programs have combined for 45 SEC titles (Alabama 30, Georgia 15), so it’s fitting that they will decide who carries the crown into the College Football Playoff.\u00a0<\/p>\n
