Alexandre Pantoja is understandably disappointed but still in good spirits after his flyweight title reign came to a shocking end after he suffered a gruesome injury in his fight against Joshua Van at UFC 323.<\/p>\n
The freak injury occurred just 26 seconds into the opening round as Van caught a head kick and Pantoja attempted to brace himself as he came down to the canvas. As soon as Pantoja\u2019s arm posted, there was a noticeable pop in the elbow and the Brazilian immediately grabbed his arm in pain and waved off the fight.<\/p>\n
The referee stepped into stop the contest with Van crowned the new UFC flyweight champion due to Pantoja\u2019s injury. Following the fight, Pantoja released a brief statement on Instagram.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been through worse,\u201d Pantoja said. \u201cI\u2019ll come back even stronger, you can be sure of that. Thank you for the messages.\u201d<\/p>\n
It was a disappointing conclusion to a fight that never really got started with Pantoja suffering the injury that has now cost him the UFC flyweight title.<\/p>\n
After the event ended, UFC officials offered a medical update on Pantoja, although it seemed like there may have been some confusion in the diagnosis.<\/p>\n
\u201cI spoke to the UFC\u2019s chief medical physician Dr. Jeff Davidson,\u201d Megan Olivi reported backstage. \u201cHe told me Pantoja had a left shoulder dislocation with spontaneous reduction. What that essentially means is his shoulder was dislocated but went back into place on its own.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn Monday in Florida, he will go for additional imaging to see the extent of the damage or if there is other damage that has been incurred and then he will meet with an orthopedic doctor as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
That drew an immediate reaction from UFC color commentator Joe Rogan after it was reconfirmed as a shoulder injury rather than his elbow.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt doesn\u2019t even make sense,\u201d Rogan said. \u201cYou saw his elbow literally leave the joint.\u201d<\/p>\n
No matter the diagnosis, Pantoja is dealing with some kind of arm injury that is likely going to keep him sidelined for the immediate future.<\/p>\n
