{"id":431369,"date":"2025-12-07T16:54:26","date_gmt":"2025-12-07T16:54:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/431369\/"},"modified":"2025-12-07T16:54:26","modified_gmt":"2025-12-07T16:54:26","slug":"chamber-orchestra-of-europe-lorelai-ensemble-and-much-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/431369\/","title":{"rendered":"Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Lorelai Ensemble, and much more"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Whether you\u2019re in the mood for a Renaissance evening, imaginative chamber music, or an a cappella women\u2019s choir, this week offers an unusually wide spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>Spotlight: <b>Chamber Orchestra of Europe<\/b> \u2014 Wednesday, Marian Anderson Hall<\/p>\n<p>In 1981, a group of young musicians \u2014 veterans of the European Community Youth Orchestra who wanted to continue working together \u2014 founded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrti.org\/tags\/chamber-orchestra-of-europe\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chamber Orchestra of Europe<\/a>, which is now one of the most prestigious ensembles in the world. In its early days, the late Claudio Abbado was the lodestar for the group, which has attracted eminent conductors such as Bernard Haitink, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Sir Antonio Pappano, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Andr\u00e1s Schiff, and Robin Ticciati. Another name on that starry list happens to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrti.org\/tags\/yannick-nezet-seguin\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yannick N\u00e9zet-S\u00e9guin<\/a>, who will lead the ensemble in an all-Brahms program, starting with the Tragic Overture and ending with the First Symphony. In between, two magnificent soloists will be on tap for the Double Concerto: violinist Veronika Eberle and cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras.<\/p>\n<p>Need a little more encouragement? Though the ensemble\u2019s current tour includes Prague, Luxembourg, and Paris, their sole United States appearances are in New York, Ann Arbor \u2014 and Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m., Marian Anderson Hall, Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, 300 South Broad Street, $29-$132; <a href=\"https:\/\/philorch.ensembleartsphilly.org\/tickets-and-events\/2025-26-season\/chamber-orchestra-of-europe\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tickets and information<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Anthony McGill, Randall Goosby, and Joshua Mhoon<\/b> \u2014 Tuesday, Perelman Theater<\/p>\n<p>In a month dense with \u201ccan\u2019t miss\u201d events from the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, this arresting evening speaks for itself. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrti.org\/tags\/anthony-mcgill\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthony McGill<\/a>, principal clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic, joins violinist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrti.org\/tags\/randall-goosby\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Randall Goosby<\/a> and pianist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrti.org\/tags\/joshua-mhoon\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joshua Mhoon<\/a> for an unusual menu of Stravinsky, Khachaturian, and Menotti, with a world premiere by the Juilliard-based composer Christopher Armstrong. The eclectic lineup includes works by Jessica Meyer, Hannah Lash, and Scott Ordway rubbing shoulders with plainchant, folk tunes, and hymns, along with world premieres by Laura Jobin-Acosta, Greg Brown, and Jocelyn Hagen. The acoustic at the Church of the Holy Trinity should be ideal to show off the singers\u2019 a cappella sheen.<\/p>\n<p>Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m., Church of the Holy Trinity, 1904 Walnut Street; $30; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmsconcerts.org\/concerts\/lorelei-ensemble\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tickets and information<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Vox Renaissance Consort<\/b> \u2014 Saturday at Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Dec. 14 at Bryn Mawr College<\/p>\n<p>Among a bouquet of offerings next weekend (or traffic jam, if you prefer), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrti.org\/tags\/vox-renaissance-consort\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vox Renaissance Consort<\/a> presents an unusual holiday slate from the 16th and 17th centuries, with rarities by William Brade, Anthony Holborne, and Michael East, among many others. In addition to a double choir and soloists, an instrumental ensemble uses period instruments (and attire), for an experience that will take you straight to the time period. Merion Avenue, Bryn Mawr, $12.20-$32.60; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ticketleap.events\/tickets\/voxamadeus\/renaissance-noel-2025-bmc\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tickets and information<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Joshua Roman: Immunity<\/b> \u2014 Dec. 14, WHYY<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI woke up the next morning and I couldn\u2019t smell my toothpaste,\u201d said renowned cellist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrti.org\/tags\/joshua-roman\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joshua Roman<\/a>, after a 2021 concert when he realized he had contracted COVID-19. As time went on, the symptoms persisted, and he realized the virus had changed him in profound ways. Roman \u2014 also a composer and Arnhold Creative Associate at the Juilliard School \u2014 has now lived with Long COVID for three years. As a response to his illness, in 2024 he released an album called Immunity, with some of his own works plus those by J.S. Bach, Allison Loggins-Hull, George Crumb, Caroline Shaw, Leonard Cohen, woven together as a narrative. Cellist Astrid Schween joined in 2016, first violinist Areta Zhulla signed on in 2018, and in 2022, violist Molly Carr replaced the late Roger Tapping. The newest member is second violinist Leonard Fu, who joined the group (and the Juilliard faculty) in the fall of 2025.
