{"id":432318,"date":"2025-12-08T02:41:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T02:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/432318\/"},"modified":"2025-12-08T02:41:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T02:41:16","slug":"kristen-stewart-says-current-state-of-filmmaking-is-capitalist-hell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/432318\/","title":{"rendered":"Kristen Stewart Says Current State Of Filmmaking Is &#8216;Capitalist Hell&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn a sprawling video interview with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YY5tIJpH0YE\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Times<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/kristen-stewart\/\" id=\"auto-tag_kristen-stewart\" data-tag=\"kristen-stewart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kristen Stewart<\/a> bemoaned the current state of filmmaking, especially as it comes to making more niche, indie projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re at a pivotal nexus because I think we\u2019re ready for a full system break,\u201d she said, \u201cand I mean that across the board, and also specific to the world I live in, which is very exclusively the entertainment industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/the-chronology-of-water-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-chronology-of-water-2\" data-tag=\"the-chronology-of-water-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Chronology of Water<\/a> director lamented that <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/hollywood\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hollywood\" data-tag=\"hollywood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hollywood<\/a> has prioritized big-budget, tentpole movies over films that come from diverse perspectives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t know, I think we need to, sort of, start stealing our movies,\u201d the Oscar-nominated actress explained. \u201cI\u2019m so appreciative of every union; trust me, we would not survive without them. But some of the terms and some of the rules and some of the structures we\u2019ve set up have created unbelievable barriers for artists to express themselves. I think that without being unfaithful, ungrateful, I think we need a little work-around. I think having it be so impossible for people to tell stories, and having it be such an exclusive and rarified, novel position to find yourself doing so, is capitalist hell, and it hates women, and it hates marginalized voices, and it\u2019s racist, and I think that we need to figure out a way to make it easier to speak to each other in cinematic terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tShe continued, \u201cIt\u2019s too hard to make movies right now that aren\u2019t blockbuster-y, whatever, proven equations,\u201d expressing a sentiment that\u2019s been echoed by fellow prominent filmmakers like <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/04\/steven-soderbergh-black-bag-mid-budget-movies-frustrating-1236372474\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steven Soderbergh<\/a>, Michael Bay and James Cameron.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cThe next movie I wanna make: I want to do it for nothing, I want to make not a dollar, I want it to be a smash hit, do you know what I mean? It\u2019s just so difficult to make movies, it just doesn\u2019t need to be,\u201d Stewart concluded. \u201cSo yeah, I\u2019m just trying to think of some weird Marxist, communist-like situation, that other people can definitely think, \u2018Oh, of course, this psycho is saying that,\u2019 but I think it\u2019s possible \u2026 The system has barred people and made it too difficult, to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDespite diversity wins at the box office over the years, a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/releases\/hollywood-diversity-in-decline-as-moviegoers-worldwide-want-more\" target=\"_blank\">UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report<\/a> from this year indicated opportunities for people of color and women experienced drops and reversal after 2023 highs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAna-Christina Ram\u00f3n, co-founder of the report and director of UCLA\u2019s Entertainment and Media Research Initiative, found that \u201c2024 saw a widespread reversal, as film studios retreated from racial and ethnic diversity in front of and behind the camera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tFellow co-founder Darnell Hunt added, \u201cThe writing was on the wall, as we previously saw the loss of executive positions and programs focused on diversity. For the studios, it seems that it wasn\u2019t about investing in what our data has shown to be profitable.
