Actor Sydney Sweeney is speaking out about the controversy surrounding her American Eagle denim ad, and now claims to have a different perspective on the fallout. <\/p>\n

Sweeney, who has blue eyes and blonde hair, appeared in a \u201cgreat jeans\u201d campaign for the clothing company in July that included an ad with a play on the words \u201cjeans\u201d and \u201cgenes.\u201d <\/p>\n

In one ad,<\/a> Sweeney said, \u201cGenes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.\u201d <\/p>\n

Social media users slammed the ad\u2019s wordplay, arguing that it had white supremacist undertones and could be interpreted as a wink to eugenics<\/a>, the racist and inaccurate theory<\/a> that human genetics can be improved through selective and controlled breeding of populations. <\/p>\n

President Donald Trump<\/a> and other members of his administration<\/a> praised Sweeney in the wake of the online backlash. Not long after, she was outed as a registered Republican<\/a>. <\/p>\n

In an interview with People<\/a>, Sweeney said she was \u201chonestly surprised\u201d by the public\u2019s reaction to the ad. <\/p>\n

\u201cI did it because I love the jeans and love the brand,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign. Many have assigned motives and labels to me that just aren\u2019t true.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cAnyone who knows me knows that I\u2019m always trying to bring people together. I\u2019m against hate and divisiveness,\u201d Sweeney added.<\/p>\n

Over the summer, American Eagle defended<\/a> Sweeney\u2019s appearance in the ad campaign.<\/p>\n
