Jalen Pitre got himself some attention on Sunday Night Football.<\/p>\n

The Houston Texans<\/a> safety navigated a sweet interception of Patrick Mahomes against the Kansas City Chiefs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Pitre jumped in the way of a pass, tipped it in the air, then spun himself around to track down the tipped ball and reel it in.<\/p>\n

He was a bit more noticeable because of what was on his head.<\/p>\n

It looked like a much larger helmet, but that’s not exactly what it was.<\/p>\n

Why does Jalen Pitre’s helmet look different?<\/p>\n

Pitre doesn’t actually have a different helmet.<\/p>\n

Instead, he’s wearing a Guardian Cap.<\/p>\n

It’s a soft-shell cover that goes over the standard helmet. It’s meant to reduce concussions and head injuries.<\/p>\n

Guardian Caps were first allowed to be worn on NFL practice fields in 2020.<\/p>\n

The first time players could wear Guardian Caps in games was 2024.<\/p>\n

Pitre was concussed in Week 9.<\/p>\n

When he returned in Week 13, he came back with a Guardian Cap.
