NY Mets: What stood out about Pete Alonso breaking team home run record<\/p>\n
Pete Alonso proved himself to be the Mets franchise’s preeminent power hitter when he set the club record with his 253rd home run on Aug. 13, 2025.<\/p>\n
ORLANDO, Fla. \u2014 A season ago at the Major League Baseball’s Winter Meetings, the Mets grabbed a stranglehold on the attention when they landed Juan Soto one night into the proceedings on the richest contract in sports.<\/p>\n
It was a massive swing by the Mets front office – one that only netted soft contact during Soto’s first season in Flushing as the team fell shy of the postseason.<\/p>\n
As president of baseball operations David Stearns and the Mets descend on this year’s installment of the league’s offseason soiree in Orlando, Fla., there is much work to do with the club’s roster with two months to go before a return trip to the Sunshine State and the beginning of spring training.<\/p>\n
The Mets have already made waves early in the offseason, trading Brandon Nimmo and bringing in Marcus Semien. Last week, they signed reliever Devin Williams to a three-year, $51 million contract to plug in one hole in the bullpen.<\/p>\n
But the futures of franchise favorites Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz still linger at the top of mind for Mets fans. After last season’s disappointment, there is a need to bolster the top of the starting rotation \u2014 either via a signing or trade \u2014 and Nimmo’s exit opens up a second gap in the outfield that needs to be filled. And the bullpen, oft a liability a season ago, could stand to add some dependable contributors after a swath of exits from last season’s unit.<\/p>\n
