The Jacksonville Jaguars had no trouble disposing of the Indianapolis Colts in Week 14, winning 36-19 without much trouble<\/a>. One big reason was that quarterback Daniel Jones was playing through a broken fibula and left the game after suffering an injury in his other leg. After his departure, Indy didn’t offer much resistance.<\/p>\n

After leaving the game, Jones was quickly ruled out<\/a>. And in the aftermath, the Jags just got an update that may clear their path to seize the AFC South title. <\/p>\n

Daniel Jones will undergo Achilles surgery, putting an end to his season <\/p>\n

Not long after the win over the Colts, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that an MRI revealed that Daniel Jones suffered an Achilles tear<\/a>, noting that that the fifth-year quarterback is facing a nine-month recovery. <\/p>\n

A few hours later, Adam Schefter of ESPN provided an update: Jones will undergo Achilles surgery with four games left in the season<\/a>. Based on how things are quickly unfolding, this could be the straw that broke the camel’s back. Or in this case, the Colts’ back. <\/p>\n

After a 7-1 start, the Colts have lost four of their last five games. Couple that with the fact that Jones is out for the year, and their odds of making the playoffs are quickly unraveling. After the game, the Jags are the favorite to seize the AFC South at -290. Meanwhile, Indy’s moneyline sits at +1,300. <\/p>\n

Next on the Colts’ schedule are the Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville (again), the San Francisco 49ers, and the Houston Texans (in the finale). Even if they get cornerback Sauce Gardner, and defensive tackle DeForest Bucker, it’s hard to see them having a better record than 2-2 after that gauntlet. Having said that, the elephant in the room must be addressed.<\/p>\n

The Jaguars must look behind their shoulder, with the Texans beating the Chiefs<\/p>\n

Perharps Indy is no longer a threat to the Jaguars, but the Houston Texans are within striking distance. Having won five in a row, the Texans are making a strong push to qualify to the playoffs. They’re coming off a dominant win over the Kansas City Chiefs and aren’t showing any signs of slowing down. <\/p>\n

Granted, Jacksonville already faced the Texans twice this season, but that doesn’t mean they can slow down. If they happen to lose one or two games the rest of the way, Houston could catch up and even get ahead of them in the division race. <\/p>\n

The good news is that the Jags have a manageable schedule the reminder of the season<\/a>. They have games against the Colts (again), the Tennesse Titans (in the finale), the New York Jets, and the Denver Broncos. Of the bunch, Denver may be the biggest threat, but if Jacksonvillle manages to go 3-1, a realistic outcome, it may be hard for the Texans to keep up. <\/p>\n

Ultimately, several things are going the Jags way, and that should incetivize them to finish the year strong. Not having to deal with Daniel Jones the next time they play Indianpolis will certainly help.<\/p>\n
