{"id":433353,"date":"2025-12-08T13:47:14","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T13:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/433353\/"},"modified":"2025-12-08T13:47:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T13:47:14","slug":"bronx-man-38-shot-to-death-in-nycha-stairwell-ending-nyc-record-12-day-run-of-no-murders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/433353\/","title":{"rendered":"Bronx man, 38, shot to death in NYCHA stairwell, ending NYC record 12-day run of no murders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 38-year-old man was shot to death in the stairwell of a Bronx NYCHA building \u2014 a murder that ended a record streak of nearly two weeks with no slayings in New York City, police said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Gregory Stewart was shot in the head about 9:05 p.m. Sunday inside a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/nycha\/downloads\/pdf\/Sotomayor%20Houses.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sotomayor Houses<\/a> building on Watson Ave. near Rosedale Ave. in Soundview, cops said.\u00a0Medics rushed the victim to Jacobi Medical Center but he could not be saved.<\/p>\n<p>A man was taken into custody but has not yet been charged.<\/p>\n<p>Stewart lived in the Wakefield section of the Bronx, according to cops.<\/p>\n<p>Stewart\u2019s murder ended a stretch of 12 days, beginning Nov. 25, that saw no new recorded homicides citywide. The only other time the city is known to have gone that long with no murders was in 2015, which also saw a 12-day stretch with no homicides, according to NYPD stats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight strategy. Great execution. That\u2019s how you set record after record,\u201d NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a statement Monday. \u201cThank you to the members of the NYPD who have sacrificed so much this year to drive down violent crime to record lows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/12\/03\/nyc-goes-over-a-week-with-no-reported-new-homicides\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last known murder<\/a> in the city before Sunday\u2019s slaying was the stabbing death of 80-year-old Lev Vayner inside his apartment on Overlook Terrace near W. 184th St. in Washington Heights on Nov. 24.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/11\/24\/man-80-found-stabbed-to-death-in-his-washington-heights-apartment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suspect<\/a>,\u00a045-year-old Alon Riabichev,\u00a0whom Vayner was kindly letting crash with him, called 911 around 3:15 a.m. and confessed to having killed Vayner, according to prosecutors.
