NHK reported that nuclear power plants in the affected areas were carrying out safety checks, with no immediate signs of problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, in brief comment to reporters, said the government set up an emergency task force to urgently assess the extent of damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe are putting people\u2019s lives first and doing everything we can,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Japan is one of the world\u2019s most earthquake-prone countries, located in the seismically active \u201cRing of Fire\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It accounts for about 20 percent of the world\u2019s earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or greater and was hit by a devastating 9.0-magnitude quake and tsunami in March 2011.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"DEVELOPING STORYDEVELOPING STORY, Japan\u2019s Meteorological Agency says 40cm tsunami observed at Mutsu Ogawara and Urakawa ports.
