Maher\u2019s reflections stemmed from comments McNearney\u2014who is an executive producer and co-head writer for her husband\u2019s show\u2014made on the We Can Do Hard Things podcast<\/a> in November. <\/p>\n There, just months after Kimmel\u2019s late-night show was suspended<\/a> following controversial remarks made after Charlie Kirk\u2019s assassination, she expressed<\/a> that her husband is \u201cfighting\u201d Trump daily, which complicated her relationships with family members who supported the president. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n McNearney, who said she \u201cgrew up in a very conservative, Republican house\u201d in St. Louis, Missouri, admitted that she has \u201ca little bit of sympathy\u201d for people in her family who are \u201cdeliberately being misinformed every day,\u201d but now it feels personal. <\/p>\n \u201cTo me, them voting for Trump is them not voting for my husband and me and our family and I unfortunately have kind of lost relationships with people in my family because of it,\u201d she said on the podcast while sitting next to Kimmel, who has long been a vocal<\/a> critic<\/a> of<\/a> Trump<\/a>, even recently receiving renewed pressure from the president<\/a> to take his show off the air.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is not just Republican vs Democrat for me anymore, to me it\u2019s family values,\u201d she added, noting that when she sees headlines about Trump now, it just makes her \u201cmad at certain aunts, uncles, cousins who put him in power.\u201d <\/p>\n She also revealed that she had sent emails to her family members before the election with a list of 10 reasons not to vote for Trump, but was either ignored \u201cor got truly insane responses.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve definitely pulled in closer with the family that I feel more aligned with. And I hate that this has happened,\u201d she said. \u201cPart of me goes, \u2018Don\u2019t let politics get in the way.\u2019 But to me, this isn\u2019t politics. It\u2019s truly values. And we\u2019re just not aligned anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n Maher then addressed the situation on his HBO show, explaining that while he had many issues with Trump himself, he didn\u2019t agree with losing relationships with family members.<\/p>\n \u201cTen reasons? I can think of 100,\u201d he said on the Nov. 21 episode of Real Time. \u201cBut I would never present it to someone as an ultimatum. Ultimatums don\u2019t make people rethink their politics.
