After Cynthia shielded Ariana from an aggressive fan on a red carpet,<\/a> several internet users recreated the moment in now-viral TikToks \u2014 many of which masculinized and villainized Cynthia for simply stepping in to protect her friend.\"Cynthia<\/p>\n

Instagram user @thefilmdiva<\/a> was one of many people to call out the memes, stating in a video that has since been liked by Ariana:<\/a> \u201cI honestly do not find what\u2019s funny with all of these different memes and videos villainizing and making fun of Cynthia Erivo\u2026I don\u2019t like it at all. I feel like there\u2019s a lot of underlying tones of racism, misogyny\u2026 Why is it always men? Why are you making her very masculine?\u201d\"Cynthia<\/p>\n

With this in mind, fans were even more appalled after seeing a recent clip of Cynthia appearing uncomfortable when an interviewer<\/a> repeatedly called her \u201ctough\u201d on a red carpet.\"Cynthia<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen did you know you were tough? You\u2019re tough,\u201d the FabTV interviewer asked, to which Cynthia replied, \u201cAm I?\u201d\"Cynthia\u201cI think so,\u201d he said. Cynthia then responded, \u201cI mean, I think I\u2019m strong.\u201d\"Cynthia<\/p>\n

\u201cTough and strong?\u201d asked the interviewer, to which Cynthia replied, \u201cI think I\u2019m strong, I think I\u2019m vulnerable, I think I\u2019m a myriad of different things.\u201d\"CynthiaThe interviewer then seemingly alluded to the aforementioned red carpet incident with Ariana as he told Cynthia, \u201cA protector, too? You\u2019re tough, you\u2019re tough. You\u2019re a tough person.\u201d\"Cynthia<\/p>\n

Cynthia responded, \u201cWell, I think I\u2019m strong, and I think I also can be protective, too. You know what I mean? I think we can be both. I think it\u2019s OK for us to be both strong, protected, and protective.\u201d\"CynthiaMeanwhile, Cynthia\u2019s publicist, Meredith O’Sullivan, could be seen visibly reacting to the interviewer\u2019s comments in the background. But as a black woman, I know what they mean with tough,\u201d one person said on Reddit<\/a>. \u201cWhile I am so glad she defended Ari from that creep, I’m tired of people flipping her vibe. Cynthia in general seems like a kind and soft-spoken person,\u201d someone else wrote, while more people called out the \u201cunwarranted hate\u201d<\/a> she\u2019s been receiving.\"Cynthia<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a black woman, this kind of rhetoric is so exhausting. Stop trying to masculinize us unless we are specifically looking for it! Nobody would ask this question to her co-star. Go look at the recent drawings and memes coming out of this situation. She\u2019s getting flak and racist responses for helping defend her costar. It\u2019s disgusting,\u201d one comment read<\/a>.<\/p>\n
