{"id":434345,"date":"2025-12-08T23:53:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T23:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/434345\/"},"modified":"2025-12-08T23:53:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T23:53:13","slug":"100-children-abducted-from-a-nigerian-catholic-school-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/434345\/","title":{"rendered":"100 children abducted from a Nigerian Catholic school released"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MINNA, Nigeria (AP) \u2014 A total of 100 of the schoolchildren <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nigeria-abductions-catholic-school-children-157834ff945cc4efde47d37bb6ed4a88\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abducted from a Nigerian Catholic school<\/a> last month and released over the weekend were hosted at a government-organized ceremony on Monday, many of them looking lost but relieved.<\/p>\n<p>Details surrounding their release were not made public and the government has not said if any ransom \u2014 common in such abductions \u2014 was paid. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nigeria-school-abductions-dc3eaa3f1b9d910211e4a2af959ee7a9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">At least 303 schoolchildren<\/a> were seized in Niger state together with 12 of their teachers when gunmen attacked St. Mary\u2019s Catholic School in Papiri community on Nov. 21. Fifty escaped in the hours that followed and at least 150 are still held, together with the teachers.<\/p>\n<p>The freed schoolchildren arrived at the Niger Government House in the state capital of Minna in several buses accompanied by military trucks. They were then received by officials who hugged and shook hands with some, before posing with them in front of cameras.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"ap-audio-100-schoolchildren-abducted-in-nigeria-are-released-but-more-are-still-held\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n                    AP AUDIO: 100 schoolchildren abducted in Nigeria are released but more are still held\n                <\/p>\n<p class=\"AudioEnhancement-description\">AP\u2019s Lisa Dwyer reports that some of the schoolchildren abducted in Nigeria have been released.<\/p>\n<p>The Niger state governor, Mohammed Bago, said health workers and experts would \u201cthoroughly examine\u201d the children before they are returned to their parents in Papiri.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo those who have been praying, please continue to pray,\u201d Bago told a gathering of government and security officials. \u201cWe hope to recover the remaining students who are still in captivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of the freed children \u2014 between the ages of 10 and 17, according to the school \u2014 arrived wearing soccer jerseys, robes and slippers. Officials said they had been in Nigeria\u2019s capital, Abuja, since the news of their release broke on Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p>The parents in faraway Papiri say they were not told about the release of the 100 and only learned about it from the media. With anguish and anticipation, many wondered if their children were among those released or still held.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just worried about his safety but praying he should be among\u201d the freed, Samuel Musa said of his 13-year-old son who was abducted at the school. \u201cHis mother has been sick since the abduction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria\u2019s President <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/bola-tinubu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bola Tinubu<\/a> commended security agencies \u201cfor their steadfast work\u201d in ensuring the safe return of the students, but did not provide further details.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy directive to our security forces remains that all the students and other abducted Nigerians across the country must be rescued and brought back home safely,\u201d Tinubu added.<\/p>\n<p>No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction, but locals blamed armed gangs that target schools and travelers in kidnappings for ransoms across Nigeria\u2019s conflict-battered north.<\/p>\n<p>The Niger state attack was among a spate of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nigeria-school-abductions-timeline-bandits-b598297dafa798cb7c18c68073e86a39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent mass abductions<\/a> in Nigeria, and happened four days after 25 schoolchildren were seized in similar circumstances in neighboring Kebbi state\u2019s Maga town. A church in the southern Kwara state was also attacked around the same time \u2014 the 38 worshipers <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nigeria-church-attack-christian-2b5cb20417f9e9a3249e8e16a6033cbd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abducted in that attack<\/a> last month have also been freed.<\/p>\n<p>Under pressure at home and from U.S. President Donald Trump \u2014 who has <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nigeria-christian-muslim-killings-kidnapping-trump-af57834a1ce47488397bf07931b5cf51\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alleged that Christians are being targeted<\/a> in Nigeria\u2019s security crisis \u2014 Tinubu has promised he will not relent until all hostages are freed.<\/p>\n<p>Nigerian authorities usually do not say much about rescue efforts and arrests in such cases are rare. Analysts believe that\u2019s because ransoms are usually paid.
