The researchers took data collected on muscle, fat, and brain tissue, and had an AI algorithm measure things like muscle volume, visceral fat (aka hidden belly fat), subcutaneous fat (fat under the skin), and predicted brain age (an estimate of how old the brain appears biologically, based on its structure).<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The researchers discovered that people who had higher amounts of visceral fat compared to their muscle mass had a higher predicted brain age. There was no meaningful link between subcutaneous fat and brain age. Overall, participants who had more muscle and less visceral fat were more likely to have younger-looking brains compared to those with more hidden belly fat and less muscle. <\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"10.0\">Why is more muscle linked to a younger biological brain age?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The study didn\u2019t explore why this link exists, but there are some theories.
