{"id":434875,"date":"2025-12-09T05:16:12","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T05:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/434875\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T05:16:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T05:16:12","slug":"u2c-navi-hit-another-snag-as-jacksonville-transportation-authority-files-suit-against-local-union-104-5-wokv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/434875\/","title":{"rendered":"U2C, NAVI hit another snag as Jacksonville Transportation Authority files suit against local union \u2013 104.5 WOKV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 The Jacksonville Transportation Authority\u2019s U2C project and its NAVI autonomous Downtown shuttle program could lose more than $100 million worth of federal grants, according to a new lawsuit filed by its non-profit wing responsible for hiring drivers and maintenance personnel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">According to the lawsuit, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1197, which represents 350 employees, is refusing to sign off on a federally required safety plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">The suit claims the union has cited safety concerns, but has failed to articulate those concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>&gt;&gt;&gt; STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">\u201cWe respect labor\u2019s role in safety oversight, but we cannot allow non-safety matters to jeopardize critical federal funding or the continuity of service our community depends on,\u201d a JTA spokesperson told Action News Jax in an emailed statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">JTA has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/119\/bills\/hr4900\/BILLS-119hr4900ih.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/119\/bills\/hr4900\/BILLS-119hr4900ih.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">highlighted legislation that has been filed in Congress<\/a> that seeks to prevent labor unions from being able to hold these types of projects hostage by refusing to sign off on safety plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">\u201cIt literally is just another problem with the NAVI project and the U2C,\u201d said Councilmember Rory Diamond (R-District 13).<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">Diamond, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/news\/local\/jta-faces-questions-duval-doge-committee-about-ultimate-urban-circulator\/OLFXZPAWI5CRLOLMNDQXWBFJDY\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/news\/local\/jta-faces-questions-duval-doge-committee-about-ultimate-urban-circulator\/OLFXZPAWI5CRLOLMNDQXWBFJDY\/\" target=\"_blank\">who has been highly critical of the autonomous vehicle project<\/a>, explained that the union appears to be trying to use its power over the approval of the safety plan as leverage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">He pointed to claims made in the lawsuit alleging the union has offered to sign off on the plan in exchange for dollar-an-hour pay raises for NAVI operators, the right to organize NAVI employees or the right to organize St. Johns River Ferry employees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">\u201cYou know, obviously trying to leverage the situation for their own benefit,\u201d said Diamond. \u201dBut it\u2019s a good example of a credible group saying that this isn\u2019t safe, and I think a lot of people have those questions. Especially after the accidents the NAVIs already had on our streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\"><b>[DOWNLOAD: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/mobile-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks<\/b><\/a><b>]<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">But Diamond argued that if the union does identify specific safety concerns as the lawsuit moves forward, it would compound existing criticisms of the project, which is already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/news\/local\/software-issue-could-put-brakes-self-driving-function-navi-shuttles-half-year\/4FIE3DN5CRFB7BXD5YKC5EWW5A\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/news\/local\/software-issue-could-put-brakes-self-driving-function-navi-shuttles-half-year\/4FIE3DN5CRFB7BXD5YKC5EWW5A\/\">facing the possibility of losing its software provider<\/a> and has struggled with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/news\/local\/jta-employees-paid-ride-navi-shuttle-inflating-ridership-taxpayers-dime\/KCMNOIRLQ5B6HGQQIAZK45ZSTA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/news\/local\/jta-employees-paid-ride-navi-shuttle-inflating-ridership-taxpayers-dime\/KCMNOIRLQ5B6HGQQIAZK45ZSTA\/\">lackluster ridership<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">Even worse, if the lawsuit is unsuccessful, he argued the entire project could be put in jeopardy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">\u201cThe City of Jacksonville is already gonna be on the hook for $100 million. With that federal funding also, this is absolutely ridiculous. It\u2019s a nonstarter,\u201d said Diamond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\"><b>[SIGN UP: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/membercenter.actionnewsjax.com\/newsletters\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter<\/b><\/a><b>]<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">Councilmember Rahman Johnson (D-District 14), who serves as council\u2019s liaison to JTA is more optimistic about the project\u2019s future and the ability from JTA and the union to resolve their issues amicably.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">\u201cOur city is stepping into a new era of mobility,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cInnovation demands accountability.
