{"id":435038,"date":"2025-12-09T06:52:34","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T06:52:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/435038\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T06:52:34","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T06:52:34","slug":"nyc-ferry-launches-staten-island-to-brooklyn-route","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/435038\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC Ferry launches Staten Island to Brooklyn route"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"535GMZKVDRCXBDIIRABC3LTW3A\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 As of 6:05 a.m. today, the boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn are again connected by boat \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2024\/02\/the-69th-street-ferry-stopped-running-in-1964-so-why-is-this-sign-up-at-the-st-george-ferry-terminal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2024\/02\/the-69th-street-ferry-stopped-running-in-1964-so-why-is-this-sign-up-at-the-st-george-ferry-terminal.html\">first time since the opening of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3VFQQCU6XJCMHDXRZRNWC3LCKQ\">On Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/transportation\/2025\/11\/long-awaited-ferry-service-between-staten-island-and-brooklyn-to-be-restored-next-month.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/transportation\/2025\/11\/long-awaited-ferry-service-between-staten-island-and-brooklyn-to-be-restored-next-month.html\">the NYC Ferry\u2019s completely overhauled schedule went into effect<\/a>. Among a number of other changes, with new routes being created and others being condensed, the new schedule established ferry service between Bay Ridge and St. George.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"I5KQP3L4GVC7BDAGNYBKKCYO4Q\">The first boat that left the fast ferry dock near Wall Street in St. George on Monday morning represented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2021\/10\/petition-calls-for-staten-island-brooklyn-fast-ferry-route.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2021\/10\/petition-calls-for-staten-island-brooklyn-fast-ferry-route.html\">an end to a four-year campaign to link the two boroughs<\/a> by water and the beginning of new connectivity between the communities. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"nws NYC ferry\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ONQG2XBCR5FMZB5DSCBAX2ZVHA.jpg\"  \/>After completing the first trip from Staten Island to Brooklyn, the NYC Ferry Starlight waits at Wall Street\/Pier 11 in Manhattan to pick up passengers for a return trip.(Advance\/SILive.com | Mike Matteo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L2AS4YGTZJEK7OQYB3MUF6JROE\">\u201cIt was a long time coming,\u201d said John Kilcullen of Tompkinsville. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NWSCC4FVWBBLDEAIXEWBOP6CKY\">\u201cIt\u2019s connecting us to the rest of the city, and this is my first trip from Staten Island to Brooklyn not via car,\u201d he continued. \u201cYou can hop over now and go to Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx via a boat. It\u2019s almost seamless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HIBBDF46SFBCFN2ZLPAZZ6SOEE\">There were six passengers on the inaugural ferry from Staten Island to Brooklyn at 6:05 a.m. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ARX64KWIYVDLZJEEK6FZJYX4FY\">As the vessel bobbed and the metal pier was heard creaking in the choppy waters, the crew of the Starlight ferryboat deftly navigated the predawn harbor waters and crossed the Narrows. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"366KU7VBRNH4LB6XKEGTRXGN3Q\">During the trip, some on board reflected on what the new ferry made possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GLYURAEG45BFNMIJCDUJMLIQA4\">\u201cI\u2019m definitely excited about the connection to Brooklyn, that\u2019s for sure,\u201d said John Gilling of Stapleton, one of the first passengers on the new ferry. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"nws NYC ferry\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Z3YQLRYY5BGV3C3MGNQ5NIWDJY.jpg\"  \/>Passengers board the NYC Ferry Owls Head at the St. George stop, on route to Midtown West, on Monday, Dec. 8, 2025.(Advance\/SILive.com | Mike Matteo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5QXEJZAMLVCKHMQQ3NDQDT5Q24\">\u201cMy wife and I just moved from Brooklyn to Staten Island in February, so we were starting to feel a little&#8230; I won\u2019t say estranged from our Brooklyn friends, but it was a pain to get there without driving,\u201d Gilling continued, adding that he was on his way to get breakfast with his sister. \u201cSo this is great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CHCZDAJ7MZBKREXKANM3G6TAZ4\">After stopping in Bay Ridge, the ferry continued to the two remaining stops on the line \u2014Brooklyn Bridge Park and Wall Street\/Pier 11. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZL2UW4QUFJCEBAZHH2OPT4VBKM\">The boat landed at the Wall Street pier in the East River just before 6:40 a.m., an approximately 35 minute journey from start to finish. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7TA53L7IO5EWFKLATOSYAXFZWY\">On a later return trip to Staten Island, one Bay Ridge resident said the new route would completely revamp his morning commute.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CZDWXUEGUZBCDBBUXXVINZKYJI\">\u201cI would take the S79 over the bridge and then transfer to Old Town, and take the Staten Island Railroad to St. George,\u201d said Ben D., who works at the courts on Staten Island and asked that his last name not be used. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t intuitive.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BKZG3HFLHRFGBKXHE5SU4K3MCM\">\u201cI don\u2019t know anybody who put [the new route] together, but they must have known that this would be better for me,\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"nws NYC ferry\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/YB3GPFAAVZAJXBFKROT2NTFP2E.jpg\"  \/>After making the initial ride to Bay Ridge on Monday morning, the NYC Ferry Starlight departs St. George for another trip to Brooklyn.(Advance\/SILive.com | Mike Matteo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AGZ52RPC7NHLFD6LHJGSSKQCRI\">Later in the morning, the New York City Economic Development Corporation \u2014 which oversees the NYC Ferry \u2014 hosted a ribbon cutting, celebrating the inaugural ride of the Staten Island to Brooklyn route. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IUM652IBBJGZRBCUFRQ3LCYIZI\">Over 70 elected officials, agency representatives, transit advocates and community members made the trip across the water, with many celebrating the culmination of years of work to bring this to fruition. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"nws NYC ferry\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/MVPLVAAZX5EG7PR6PCWRSD3SDQ.jpg\"  \/>Staten Island politicians including (from left) District Attorney Michael E. That\u2019s how long this idea has been floating out there,\u201d said Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican representing Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"54VE4AWS2RFBHHFBSU35PW2ORY\">\u201cI\u2019m really proud to have delivered billions of dollars in federal infrastructure funding to support the DOT and EDC,\u201d she continued. \u201cThis particular ferry is important to me, being somebody who represents both Staten Island and Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and being able to connect the two.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"G4UB5SZTI5FCFLSRZHEROSHBWQ\">In addition, Borough President Vito Fossella, District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, and representatives for Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams and State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton were in attendance. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3VFAZSMNFNAXXGEBJELQ2FNWYM\">\u201cResidents have been calling for a faster, more reliable way to reach Brooklyn,\u201d said Assemblymember Charles Fall, a Democrat representing the North Shore, a small portion of Brooklyn, and lower Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OOBS2ESLPBDPJIA73PNCVO463Y\"> \u201cThe new fast ferry delivers on that shared effort. As each stop was announced over the ship\u2019s PA system, a cheer erupted from the passengers, with others lining up to briefly disembark and tour the fast ferry stops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KIPUKKFEEZB6ZDVG44IHYYOWGQ\">\u201cAfter more than three years of advocacy, it\u2019s finally time to celebrate!\u201d said Rose Uscianowski, the Staten Island and South Brooklyn Organizer for Transportation Alternatives. \u201cThe expansion of fast ferry service is an enormous win for all of Staten Island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FUXZSYAQF5G4RMXZ5ZJHJJ7M6Y\">The enthusiasm for this ferry connection is one that EDC officials say was shared during the public comment period on the changes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/07\/proposed-nyc-ferry-route-changes-would-re-establish-connection-between-staten-island-brooklyn.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/07\/proposed-nyc-ferry-route-changes-would-re-establish-connection-between-staten-island-brooklyn.html\">after the new route was first proposed by the agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XHLDF46PQFAIFKEOJN5DPCQIJY\">\u201cWhen we announced in July our original plan, we put out an engagement form to ask our riders what they thought and we got 15,00 responses to that survey,\u201d explained James Wong, executive director of NYC Ferry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y2TGRPZLINDFVF3X3264S6G3LA\">\u201cThose numbers really gave us the foundation to say that people were going to love this, and, yes, Staten Island to Brooklyn was consistently one of the things that people were asking for the entire time.
