Chan School of Public Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Though quinoa is technically a seed, we classify it as a whole grain because its nutrient profile is similar to other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/food-dining\/2023\/10\/21\/what-are-the-healthiest-grains\/71219818007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">whole grains<\/a>,&#8221; Jill Weisenberger, a registered dietician and author of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/jillweisenberger.com\/books\/prediabetes-complete-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prediabetes: A Complete Guide<\/a>,&#8221; previously told USA TODAY.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And unlike some whole grains such as barley, rye and wheat, quinoa is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2023\/12\/09\/what-is-gluten\/71725415007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gluten-free<\/a>. It&#8217;s also better for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2024\/02\/27\/what-is-glucose\/72708486007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">glucose management<\/a> than refined grains like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2023\/11\/07\/is-rice-good-for-weight-loss\/71418461007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">white rice<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because it contains protein, fiber and micronutrients, quinoa has less of an impact on you blood sugar,&#8221; Dr. Uma Naidoo, director of nutritional and lifestyle psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Harvard-trained nutritional biologist behind \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hachettebookgroup.com\/titles\/uma-naidoo-md\/calm-your-mind-with-food\/9780316502092\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Calm Your Mind with Food<\/a>,\u201d previously told USA TODAY.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Delicious, nutritious and versatile, quinoa has gained popularity over the last few decades as a high-protein, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2023\/12\/09\/what-is-gluten\/71725415007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gluten-free<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/food-dining\/2023\/10\/21\/what-are-the-healthiest-grains\/71219818007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">whole-grain<\/a> base for many dishes,&#8221; Naidoo said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Is quinoa actually good for you?<\/p>\n<p>Quinoa is a good source of protein, omega-3s and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2023\/06\/01\/what-does-fiber-do-for-the-body\/70267482007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dietary fiber<\/a>. The whole grain is also rich in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2023\/05\/11\/what-are-antioxidants-food-free-radicals-oxidative-stress-explained\/70196999007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">antioxidants<\/a>, which have been shown to reduce one&#8217;s risk of heart disease and certain cancers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Quinoa is popular because it contains more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2023\/05\/16\/how-much-protein-should-i-eat-to-gain-muscle-grams-per-day\/70221088007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">protein<\/a>, omega-3 fatty acids and fiber than many other grains that we consume regularly,&#8221; Abby Langer, a clinical nutritionist, registered dietitian and founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/abbylangernutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Abby Langer Nutrition<\/a>, previously told USA TODAY.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is also known for being a good source of vitamins and minerals such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2023\/10\/09\/folate-folic-acid-pregnancy-recommendation\/71040944007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">folate<\/a>, manganese, phosphorous, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2023\/05\/04\/what-foods-have-iron-anemia-signs-deficiency-explained\/70183581007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iron<\/a>, vitamin B1 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2023\/03\/30\/does-magnesium-help-you-sleep\/11561267002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">magnesium<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Plus, it\u2019s gluten-free, making it a \u201cvery healthy option for many individuals,&#8221; Naidoo said.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2023\/08\/21\/what-are-peptides\/70464947007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">amino acids<\/a> in quinoa are key for muscle development and for supporting overall immune health, she added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unlike many other whole grains, quinoa is a great source of lysine, yet another essential amino acid that is necessary for protein synthesis,&#8221; Naidoo said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Gluten gets a lot of hype. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2023\/12\/09\/what-is-gluten\/71725415007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">But should you cut it from your diet?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Are quinoa and couscous the same thing?<\/p>\n<p>Couscous may seem like a grain, but it\u2019s technically a type of pasta, says Helen Tieu, registered dietitian at <a href=\"https:\/\/dietredefined.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diet Redefined<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouscous is made from ground durum wheat (or) semolina flour, the same base used for pasta. The shape is just rolled into small granules,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Compared to couscous, quinoa is more nutrient-dense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuinoa would be ideal to get in more protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals,\u201d Tieu explained. \u201cThis helps to support satiety and blood sugar management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For example, 1 cup of quinoa contains about 22 grams of protein and 10 grams of fiber compared to 1 cup of couscous, which has only about 6 grams and 2 grams, respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">In case you missed: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2024\/02\/27\/what-is-glucose\/72708486007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Glucose, insulin and why levels are important to manage. Here&#8217;s why.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Is quinoa a protein or carb?<\/p>\n<p>Quinoa is also often touted as being a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2023\/07\/05\/how-many-protein-shakes-a-day-should-you-drink-experts-safe-muscle\/70336602007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high-protein<\/a> food, &#8220;although I don&#8217;t consider it to be a high quality source of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2024\/01\/21\/how-much-protein-in-chicken\/72158391007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">protein<\/a> as it contains only 8 grams per cup,&#8221; Langer said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Considering that most healthy people should be consuming 25 to 30 grams of protein at each meal, the volume of quinoa we&#8217;d have to eat to achieve that would be huge,&#8221; she explained.<\/p>\n<p>Contributing: Daryl Austin<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"How Healthy Are Avocados Really?
