{"id":435675,"date":"2025-12-09T13:33:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T13:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/435675\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T13:33:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T13:33:13","slug":"how-the-chargers-defense-stymied-jalen-hurts-and-the-eagles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/435675\/","title":{"rendered":"How the Chargers&#8217; defense stymied Jalen Hurts and the Eagles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It was a play that encapsulated everything that went right \u2014 and wrong \u2014 for the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/chargers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chargers<\/a> on defense against the Philadelphia Eagles at SoFi Stadium on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>On a third down in the second quarter, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/chargers\/live\/chargers-philadelphia-eagles-live-updates-watch-start-time-odds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts<\/a> threw a pass intended for A.J. Brown that was picked off by De\u2019Shawn Hand. Will Shipley then punched the ball loose and Hurts recovered. Moments after that, Jamaree Caldwell forced another fumble before Troy Dye pounced on it to end a wild, three-turnover sequence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe made a little call, I had to drop back the coverage and I was just shocked the ball was coming my way,\u201d Hand said after the first interception of his eight-year career. \u201cSo I had to go and secure the bag, but then I fumbled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the ball carriers, I understand them. That stuff is hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moments of jubilation ultimately outweighed periods of frustration for the Chargers\u2019 defense, which picked off Hurts four times and forced five turnovers in a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/chargers\/story\/2025-12-08\/justin-herbert-chargers-show-grit-eagles-overtime-win\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">22-19 overtime win<\/a>. Hurts passed for 240 yards and the Eagles had 365 total yards, but turnovers proved too costly for the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2025-02-09\/super-bowl-lix-eagles-chiefs-jalen-hurts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defending Super Bowl champions<\/a> to overcome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat a team we have, they refuse to lose, just a great feeling of winning,\u201d <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/chargers\/story\/2025-09-12\/jim-harbaugh-on-his-time-with-raiders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh<\/a> said. \u201cThe defense was incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Chargers defense held the Eagles in check for most of the game, but things took a bleak turn when <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/rams\/story\/2025-01-19\/saquon-barkley-greatest-seasons-nfl-history-eagles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saquon Barkley<\/a> broke free on a 52-yard touchdown run off a fake tush-push to open the fourth quarter, putting Philadelphia ahead 16-13 for its first lead.<\/p>\n<p>After the Chargers went three and out on their next possession, cornerback <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chargers.com\/team\/players-roster\/cam-hart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cam Hart<\/a> picked off Hurts, helping set up a drive that led to Dicker\u2019s third field goal of the game. The Chargers defense then held the Eagles to a three and out and a field goal to make it a three-point game before Dicker kicked a 46-yard field goal in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime.<\/p>\n<p>Following a 54-yard field goal by Dicker to put the Chargers ahead in overtime, the Eagles quickly marched to midfield. Facing fourth down and four, the Chargers were one more stop away from winning when a neutral-zone infraction on <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/chargers\/story\/2025-10-10\/odafe-oweh-chargers-prove-doubters-wrong-ravens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Odafe Oweh<\/a> gave the Eagles a new set of downs.<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Chargers cornerback Cam Hart forces Eagles wide receiver A.J. Hart deflected a pass intended for Eagles wide receiver Jahan Dotson just outside the end zone, and safety <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chargers.com\/team\/players-roster\/tony-jefferson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tony Jefferson<\/a> caught the ball to end the game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShout out [defensive coordinator Jesse] Minter, just calling the right call, that\u2019s where it starts first,\u201d Jefferson said. \u201cExecution is after that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On a night when quarterback <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/chargers\/story\/2025-12-08\/justin-herbert-chargers-show-grit-eagles-overtime-win\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Justin Herbert<\/a> was nursing a surgically repaired broken left (non-throwing) hand that limited his effectiveness in the passing game, the defense proved to be a decisive factor in helping the Chargers win for the fifth time in six games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s playoff football,\u201d Hart said. \u201cAny small mistake, any small error can affect the game in totality.
