But the big question on our minds has been: what’s next for foldables? Well, it looks like we just got a huge clue. The folks over at Android Authority have spotted some intriguing new animations buried in a recent One UI 8 build that seem to give us our first real look at Samsung’s upcoming trifold phone, rumored to be called the “Galaxy G Fold.”

This isn’t a total surprise, as Samsung gave us a quick, illustrative tease of a triple-screen device back at their January Unpacked event. These new animations, however, provide far more detail on what the actual device might look like and how it will function.

Source: Android Authority

So, let’s break down what these leaked animations show us. The device, labeled “Multifold 7” in the software files, features a three-panel design with two hinges. A large, triple-camera setup is located on the rear of the right-most panel, which also appears to house the NFC chip. When folded, the central panel acts as the cover display, complete with its own front-facing camera.

The folding mechanism itself is fascinating! It’s not the “Z” shape seen on devices like the Huawei Mate XT. Instead, one animation shows the left-hand display folding inward, with the right-hand display then sandwiching over the top of it. This G-style fold would, in theory, keep the large internal screen completely protected when closed. The design isn’t without its quirks, though; another animation explicitly warns users not to fold the right-side panel first, as the large camera module would prevent it from closing properly and could potentially damage the displays.

Featured Videos

As with any leak, it’s important to remember that this may not be the final design. While these animations from Samsung’s own software are our most concrete evidence yet, the final design or marketing name (“Galaxy G Fold” vs. “Multifold 7”) could still change. The good news is, we don’t have to wait long to hopefully find out more. With the next Unpacked event happening on July 9th, our fingers are crossed that Samsung gives us an official look, along with pricing and availability details, for the next chapter in foldable phones.

And if you’re interested in picking up a new Galaxy device when they’re announced next week, make sure to head over to Samsung’s website and sign up to “Reserve the next Galaxy.” This reservation doesn’t cost anything, but for signing up, you’ll get a $50 Samsung Credit (redeemable towards ecosystem purchases during preorder) and be entered into a sweepstakes for a chance to win a $5,000 Samsung credit!

Join Chrome Unboxed Plus

Introducing Chrome Unboxed Plus – our revamped membership community.
