{"id":43617,"date":"2025-07-06T14:58:34","date_gmt":"2025-07-06T14:58:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/43617\/"},"modified":"2025-07-06T14:58:34","modified_gmt":"2025-07-06T14:58:34","slug":"flash-flooding-in-san-antonio-leaves-more-than-a-dozen-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/43617\/","title":{"rendered":"Flash flooding in San Antonio leaves more than a dozen dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The city, which forecasters say typically gets about 3 inches of rain in June, was inundated with nearly 10 inches of rain last week.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;right:0;bottom:0;width:100%;height:100%;z-index:2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/84165572007.jpg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vidplayicon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/appservices\/universal-web\/universal\/icons\/icon-play-alt-white.svg\" alt=\"play\" style=\"height:40px;margin:auto 18px auto 27px;width:40px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Overnight flash flooding traps cars, closes San Antonio roads<\/p>\n<p>Overnight flash floods created dangerous driving conditions in San Antonio, Texas, Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The Weather Channel<\/p>\n<p>Residents in San Antonio were recovering after a month&#8217;s worth of rain swamped parts of the city, trapping drivers, triggering treacherous water rescues and leaving more than a dozen people dead.<\/p>\n<p>The city, which forecasters said typically gets about 3 inches of rain in June, was inundated with nearly 10 inches of rain the night of June 11 and into the morning of June 12.<\/p>\n<p>A rain gauge in Mico, Texas, about 25 miles northwest of San Antonio, reported 8.49 inches of rain in 24 hours on June 11, more than double the 3.28 inches that typically fall throughout all of June, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-news\/san-antonio-flooding-claims-5-lives\/1783936\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Accuweather said<\/a>. Closer to the coast, 20 miles east of Victoria, 9.85 inches was reported. Gauges near Carancahua Bay topped 14 inches by the end of last week, according to Accuweather.<\/p>\n<p>The death toll rose to 13, <a href=\"https:\/\/news4sanantonio.com\/news\/local\/medical-examiner-identifies-four-more-victims-of-thursdays-deadly-flooding-perrin-beitel-local-torrential-san-antonio\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to San Antonio station WOAI<\/a>. But all those who were missing have been found as of the weekend, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SANANTONIOFIREDEPARTMENT\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Antonio Fire Department said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those lost during this tragic event,&#8221; the department said on its Facebook account.<\/p>\n<p>San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg reached out to families and lauded first responders for their efforts to save lives. &#8220;Our hearts are with the families of those we\u2019ve lost to this week\u2019s flash floods and the families who continue searching for their loved ones,&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Ron_Nirenberg\/status\/1933624215036432660\" rel=\"nofollow\"> he said on X<\/a>. &#8220;I want to personally thank our San Antonio first responders and their families for their sacrifices toward the recovery efforts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Bexar County Medical Examiner&#8217;s Office told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kens5.com\/article\/news\/community\/texas-flood-victims-san-antonio-weather-latest\/273-0200b082-829d-4fbc-a39a-c71008967fac\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">KENS 5<\/a> that 13 victims have now been recovered and identified.<\/p>\n<p>On June 14, the county medical examiner&#8217;s office shared the names of nine victims who died in floodwaters. They include Martha De La Torre Rangel, 55; Victor Manuel Macias Castro, 28; Matthew Angel Tufono, 51; Christine Gonzalez, 29; Rudy Garza, 61; Jose Pinadelatoore, 28; Andrew Sanchez, 60; Brett Riley, 63; and Stevie Richards,\u00a042, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/news\/weather\/article\/san-antonio-flood-deaths-20376235.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MySanAntonio.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The county medical examiner&#8217;s office identified three more victims on June 15, including Derwin Anderson, 43; Roseann Cobb, 41; and Carlos Valdez III,\u00a067, MySanAntonio.com reported.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stories of our planet and our communities: <a href=\"https:\/\/profile.usatoday.com\/newsletters\/climate-point\/?ipid=signuptop10\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/profile.usatoday.com\/newsletters\/climate-point\/?ipid=signuptop10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up<\/a> for USA TODAY&#8217;s Climate Point newsletter.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Residents described harrowing calls from loved ones trapped by the rising waters on area roadways.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news4sanantonio.com\/news\/local\/severe-flooding-kills-11-families-still-looking-for-answers-torrential-rain-downpour-weather\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Martina Anderson told WOAI <\/a>she last heard from her husband, Derwin, the morning of June 12. &#8220;He was in distress,&#8221; she told the station. &#8220;He said his car had went off into the creek. He was actually going underwater as he called us. He was shouting &#8216;I can&#8217;t get out, I can&#8217;t get out.&#8217; &#8220;<\/p>\n<p>Brittany Guerrero said that her father, Rudy Garza, called her mother as floodwaters raged, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/06\/13\/like-an-oceans-coming-at-me-daughter-recalls-final-words-from-father-in-deadly-flash-flooding\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">KSAT reported<\/a>. \u201cHe said, \u2018Oh my God, Sylvia. Water\u2019s coming into my car,\u2019\u201d Guerrero said. &#8220;She said, \u2018Baby, can you reverse?\u2019 And he goes, \u2018You don\u2019t understand. It\u2019s like an ocean is coming at me.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Heavy rain from overnight thunderstorms that hit San Antonio led to the tragic flooding, <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/news\/weather\/news\/2025-06-12-deadly-flooding-in-san-antonio-texas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Weather.com reported<\/a>, inundating roads across the city with high water.<\/p>\n<p>In a news release on June 13, the city of San Antonio said severe storms caused widespread flash flooding with 3 to 8 inches of rain falling across Medina, Bexar, Comal, Hays and Guadalupe counties, as well as parts of the Coastal Plains.<\/p>\n<p>The city noted that flooding remained a &#8220;serious concern&#8221; along the Medina River through June 13 and the San Antonio River south of the city through the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The fire department responded to 70 water rescue incidents and 16 &#8220;high water investigations,&#8221; the city said. Those included an incident in which rapidly moving water swept away a line of cars that had been sitting in traffic the morning of June 12 into the creek below, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kens5.com\/article\/news\/local\/high-water-rescues-san-antonio-flooding-rain-weather-traffic-crossing\/273-6abb3e8a-f74f-4f2f-b156-29e71e2cd331\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">KENS 5 reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As of June 15, four roadways remained closed because of flooding. The city previously reported that there were 18 roadway closures on June 13 because of debris and potential pavement damage.
