\n\tGrammy-nominated opera, classical and gospel singer Jubilant Sykes<\/a> was stabbed to death at his Santa Monica home on Monday \u2014 allegedly by his son, police told KTLA<\/a>. He was 71.<\/p>\n

\n\tOfficers were called to Sykes\u2019 home at approximately 9:20 p.m. after someone inside dialed 911 to report an assault in progress, police said.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOfficers arrived and contacted the reporting party, who directed them into the home where they located an adult male with significant injuries,\u201d Santa Monica Police Lt. Erika Aklufi said. Sykes, who was not publicly identified as the victim until Tuesday, was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe suspect, the victim\u2019s son, Micah Sykes, 31, was found inside the residence and taken into custody without incident,\u201d police said. He will be booked on suspicion of homicide and the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney\u2019s Office for consideration, authorities told KTLA.<\/p>\n

\n\tA native of Los Angeles, Sykes began singing soprano as a child. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cInitially, I had no dreams of becoming an opera singer,\u201d he told California State Fullerton\u2019s CSUF News<\/a> in 2019. \u201cBut that changed when I was at Cal State Fullerton. I had teachers who poured their lives into me. I had everything I needed right on campus to prepare me for my career.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe has performed at such prestigious venues as the Metropolitan Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, London\u2019s Barbican Centre, the Apollo Theater, Hollywood Bowl, New Orleans Jazz Festival and many others. He performed in the role of the Celebrant in the 2009 recording of Leonard Bernstein\u2019s Mass,<\/a> which earned him a Grammy nomination.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is a classic and singers often tend to overdo it,\u201d Sykes told CSUF of Mozart\u2019s \u201cMarriage of Figaro,\u201d in a telling description of his craft. \u201cI like to take a different approach \u2014 less swagger and more of a sinister \u2018I\u2019ll get him\u2019 kind of attitude. This doesn\u2019t need to be too big. Take in low breaths.
