City Plants’ goals are to improve energy efficiency and increase the tree canopy in the many L.A. communities that need more shade.

Every Saturday, City Plants and two other nonprofits — LA Compost and Los Angeles Beautification Team — hold “tree adoptions” in different parts of the city. According to City Plants executive director Carlos Campero, “Adopting means you receive the free trees, and in return you pledge to water and care for the tree until it is established.”

“Every resident, regardless of their neighborhood, deserves access to the clean air and cooling benefits that trees provide,” Campero said. “Our adoption events are critical because they foster a sense of stewardship. When a resident adopts a tree, they commit to being part of the solution for a healthier, greener Los Angeles.”

Volunteers get compost ready on Saturday, Encino Dec 6, 2025.
