{"id":436558,"date":"2025-12-09T23:37:21","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T23:37:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/436558\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T23:37:21","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T23:37:21","slug":"ukraine-reportedly-targets-russias-shadow-fleet-in-foreign-waters-as-sanctions-fail-to-sink-putins-oil-sales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/436558\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine reportedly targets Russia&#8217;s shadow fleet in foreign waters as sanctions fail to sink Putin&#8217;s oil sales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ukraine has reportedly struck several oil tankers off the coasts of Turkey and West Africa in a campaign against Russia&#8217;s so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/russia-works-around-international-sanctions-amid-war-with-ukraine-60-minutes-transcript\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">shadow fleet<\/a>, months after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZelenskyyUa\/status\/1975577373694124129\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">called<\/a> for Kyiv&#8217;s partners to strengthen their response to the vessels that Moscow uses to evade international sanctions and continue selling its natural resources.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has previously <a href=\"https:\/\/theins.ru\/en\/news\/286467\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">targeted<\/a> fuel tankers and <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/ukrainian-drones-destroy-70-of-fuel-tanks-at-russias-temryuk-seaport-general-staff-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">infrastructure<\/a> in Russian ports and on land as part of its efforts to undermine the crucial source of Moscow&#8217;s war funding, but the recent attacks reported by Ukrainian media, citing the country&#8217;s intelligence agencies, have taken place outside Russia&#8217;s territorial waters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Europe and the U.S. have sanctioned hundreds of ships in the shadow fleet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epc.eu\/publication\/europes-security-begins-at-sea-its-time-to-counter-russias-shadow-fleet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">accusing<\/a> them of violating bans on Russian oil sales, transporting stolen Ukrainian grain, and even suspected of spying on or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/russia-alleged-hybrid-warfare-undersea-cables\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">damaging underwater telecommunications cables and pipelines<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In October, Zelenskyy <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZelenskyyUa\/status\/1975577373694124129\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> Kyiv&#8217;s intelligence service was providing information to European partners and &#8220;expect that efforts to counter Russian interference will be significantly strengthened.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As of Tuesday, the sanctioned crude oil tanker Kairos was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bta.bg\/en\/news\/world\/1022743-tanker-flying-foreign-flag-stranded-by-ahtopol-bad-weather-preventing-crew-s-ev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">grounded<\/a> off the coast of NATO member Bulgaria after a Turkish tugboat that had been towing it from Turkey&#8217;s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea separated from the vessel in Bulgarian waters, according to state-owned Bulgarian news agency BTA.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kairos and another sanctioned oil tanker, the Virat, were both hit by Ukrainian &#8220;Sea Baby&#8221; drones in the Black Sea in separate attacks at the end of November, according to the independent Ukrainian news outlet Hromadske, which <a href=\"https:\/\/hromadske.ua\/viyna\/255537-za-pidryvom-dvokh-tankeriv-tinyovoho-flotu-rf-stoyit-sbu-dzerelo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cited<\/a> sources in the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).<\/p>\n<p>Sea Baby drones hit the two sanctioned oil tankers in the Black Sea in a joint operation between the 13th Main Directorate of Military Counterintelligence of the SBU and the Ukrainian Navy, sources in the SBU told CBS News.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The SBU continues to take active steps to curtail Russia&#8217;s financial capabilities to wage war against Ukraine,&#8221; an SBU source said. &#8220;Sea Baby naval drones disabled ships that could transport oil worth almost $70 million and helped the Kremlin circumvent international sanctions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Publicly available ship tracking data corroborated the BTA report suggesting the Turkish tug had separated from the tanker six miles from Bulgaria&#8217;s coast. The Kairos was stranded on Tuesday off Ahtopol, on Bulgaria&#8217;s southern Black Sea coast, without heat or electricity, according to BTA.<\/p>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/kairos.png#.png\" alt=\"kairos.png \" height=\"407\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                  The Kairos has been stranded off the Bulgarian coast since it ran aground on December 5\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                MarineTraffic.com<\/p>\n<p>The Bulgarian Navy airlifted several crew members to shore, but authorities had been unable to tow the oil tanker to safety as of Tuesday due to poor weather conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Late last month, the technical manager of another tanker, the Mersin, said the vessel was impacted by a series of explosions while anchored off the coast of Senegal. The crew was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid036zdzUxWGNmwyosQW24q98ZfjGEVuiEjYaSoQRoGphAhteM49G9Bp8qahL5ivXc53l&amp;id=100089250996650&amp;__cft__%5B0%5D=AZV290bMKKnLJNscvMW8HwrwgsIrx9ROQALbX7WS5jm1UMqKFR8QTJp7wQyLpnGyWQfEu5o7-5EQWvljhz_ZvUZBImDd_KeIuDWLPJUJr85qSXK5Ar54CsdRYJnDhx1_E5fcItjkuosYq19-fmUWLy-YCI0N4A600_4x-QqBZ1JteLxEb5XnPNxprRVZfcf5DO8&amp;__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rescued<\/a>, according to Senegalese officials, and the vessel&#8217;s technical manager, Besiktas Shipping, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.besiktasshipping.com\/statement-about-m-t-mersin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> seawater flooded into the engine room but the ship remained &#8220;safe&#8221; and posed no safety or navigational risks.<\/p>\n<p>The Mersin remained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africansecurityanalysis.com\/updates\/senegal-critical-maritime-emergency-tanker-mersin-listing-off-dakar-with-39-000-tonnes-of-diesel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">stranded<\/a> with some 30,000 tons of diesel fuel on board, however, according to the African Security Analysis think tank.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The tanker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinetraffic.com\/en\/ais\/details\/ships\/shipid:412040\/mmsi:353323000\/imo:9428683\/vessel:MERSIN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">departed<\/a> from the Russian port of Taman on August 21 and arrived in Senegal in late September, where it has remained at anchor, according to open-source data from MarineTraffic. While the Mersin is not currently among the vessels sanctioned by the U.S., ships operated by BesiktasShipping have engaged in highly risky ship-to-ship crude oil transfers while anchored, according to the sanctions compliance monitoring organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensanctions.org\/entities\/NK-ZCcjBNKi39Sjc4hDrLBo6Y\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">OpenSanctions<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/mersin.png#.png\" alt=\"mersin.png \" height=\"408\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                  Open-source information shows the Mersin at anchor off the coast of Dakar on December 9, 2025\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                MarineTraffic.com<\/p>\n<p>Video <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Gerashchenko_en\/status\/1995146126589120701\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">circulating<\/a> on social media, dated Nov. 30, shows the Mersin sinking. CBS News has not confirmed the source of the video, but the oil tanker&#8217;s partially-submerged name is visible in the clip, seemingly recorded from a passing vessel.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian officials have not publicly confirmed any involvement in any of the explosions in the Black Sea or off the coast of Africa, all of which occurred within a few days.
