{"id":436617,"date":"2025-12-10T00:08:22","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T00:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/436617\/"},"modified":"2025-12-10T00:08:22","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T00:08:22","slug":"liberals-defeat-poilievre-pipeline-motion-insist-they-back-future-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/436617\/","title":{"rendered":"Liberals defeat Poilievre pipeline motion, insist they back future project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/liberals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liberals<\/a> on Tuesday defeated a motion by Conservative Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/pierre-poilievre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pierre Poilievre<\/a> that he had said was seeking to affirm their support for a new pipeline to the West Coast, which the government insisted does not mean it doesn\u2019t back such a project.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The motion used partial language from <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11546159\/carney-pipeline-deal-alberta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the memorandum of understanding signed between Ottawa and Alberta<\/a> last month that sets the stage for a bitumen pipeline that will increase oil exports to Asia from a yet-unnamed deep-water port in B.C.<\/p>\n<p>It specifically cited a federal commitment in the memorandum to \u201cenable\u201d a new pipeline, \u201cincluding if necessary through an appropriate adjustment\u201d of <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11546507\/bc-tanker-ban-explainer-pipeline-deal-alberta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the northern British Columbia oil tanker ban<\/a> \u2014 language that has been opposed by Coastal First Nations and the B.C. government.<\/p>\n<p>The motion called for \u201cwhile respecting the duty to consult Indigenous Peoples.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Liberals said Tuesday they will vote against the motion, accusing Poilievre of seeking division and \u201cplaying games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanadians see the motion before us today for what it is: it\u2019s a cynical ploy to divide us, it\u2019s a cheap political stunt,\u201d Energy Minister Tim Hodgson told reporters before the vote.<\/p>\n<p>The motion is not legislation and would not automatically authorize any specific project.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Conservative motion puts pressure on Liberals\u2019 energy promises'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/251208-MACKENZIE.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:58<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tConservative motion puts pressure on Liberals\u2019 energy promises\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Conservatives on Tuesday amended the motion \u201cin the spirit of collaboration\u201d to add more language from the MOU on \u201cmeaningful\u201d Indigenous consultation and \u201cengaging with British Columbia immediately in a trilateral discussion on the pipeline project.\u201d It also adds points on pursuing carbon capture and storage.<\/p>\n<p>The amendment was also defeated Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Poilievre mentioned those points while challenging Prime Minister Mark Carney to vote for the motion in question period Tuesday, without acknowledging the motion had been updated.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took the wording for the motion right out of his deal, and if he votes against the motion, he\u2019s voting against the pipeline to the Pacific, he\u2019s voting against consultation with the First Nations people and the British Columbia government, and he\u2019s even voting against his own beloved carbon capture and storage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Carney said the Conservatives should put forward the entire memorandum as a motion for a vote, which the Liberals would support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe memorandum of understanding is not something that you can pick and choose from,\u201d he said in French.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to eat the entire meal, not just the appetizer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NDP, Bloc Quebecois and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May joined the Liberals in voting against the Conservative motion and amendment, saying they oppose a new pipeline in general.<\/p>\n<p>A recorded vote was held for the amendment, and all parties applied the same results to the original motion.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'B.C. It\u2019s really an unnecessary and redundant motion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The oil tanker ban on the northern B.C. coast, which was first promised by Trudeau in 2015, has been blamed for killing the Northern Gateway and Eagle Spirit pipeline projects from the Alberta oilsands to northwestern B.C.<\/p>\n<p>Federal Conservatives and successive Alberta governments have called on the 2019 federal law the tanker ban<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11555980\/first-nations-chiefs-vote-unanimously-reject-changes-bc-oil-tanker-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Assembly Columbia, and I think Canada needs to understand and respect that,\u201d Haida Nation president and Coastal First Nations vice-president Gaagwiis Jason Alsop told reporters in Ottawa on unified, House leader says\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Calgary MP Corey Hogan, the parliamentary secretary to Hodgson, acknowledged voting \u201cno\u201d could send the wrong message that Liberals were not \u201cgame-playing\u201d for putting a future pipeline in jeopardy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he was thinking about this in terms of how do we actually get a pipeline built, he would never have brought forward this motion,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a risk in voting yes, there\u2019s a risk in voting no. This motion was designed to create risk, because this motion is designed not to get a pipeline built but instead to try and poke at people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hodgson, when asked Tuesday if voting \u201cno\u201d will create uncertainty for potential pipeline proponents, said the MOU as a whole sends the right message to industry.<\/p>\n<p>Gull-Masty added the MOU shows clarity and \u201cmaturity\u201d by clearly stating the intent to consult and collaborate with all affected parties before a project is approved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s motion that\u2019s being put on the floor is not a \u2018no\u2019 vote for the MOU.
