{"id":436780,"date":"2025-12-10T01:46:23","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T01:46:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/436780\/"},"modified":"2025-12-10T01:46:23","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T01:46:23","slug":"victor-lundys-modernist-house-preserved-by-houston-locals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/436780\/","title":{"rendered":"Victor Lundy&#8217;s modernist house preserved by Houston locals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The saga concerning late American architect Victor Lundy&#8217;s personal residence in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/houston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Houston<\/a>, Texas, USA, has been resolved following a last-minute bid from local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/preservation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">preservationists<\/a> who successfully purchased the home.<\/p>\n<p>Buyers Dan and Carol Price were able to acquire the Bellaire property for $1.75 million after a hard-fought yearlong advocacy campaign staged by the <a href=\"https:\/\/texashistoricalfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Texas Historical Foundation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonmod.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Houston Mod<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docomomo-us.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Docomomo US<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.preservationhouston.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Preservation Houston<\/a>, where the Prices sit on the board.<\/p>\n<p>The home, a low-slung, two-bedroom design defined by a curving glass wall that frames its main living space and a roofline supported by elliptical glue-laminated hemlock wood arches, was completed in 1988 and comes with an attached studio.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2278356 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/lundy-house-texas-preservation_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Victor Lundy House in Houston\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Victor Lundy&#8217;s personal residence in Houston has been saved by preservationists<\/p>\n<p>Previous owners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docomomo-us.org\/news\/victor-lundy-s-texas-home-in-danger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had planned<\/a>\u00a0to work with Habitat for Humanity on repurposing materials taken from its planned demolition following the initial sale of the property for at least $1.43 million that preceded Lundy&#8217;s death at age 101 in November 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Preservation Houston now says the plan is to &#8220;restore the property and explore possibilities for its continued use and preservation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/business\/real-estate\/article\/victor-lundy-home-saved-houston-bellaire-21112848.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> includes use as a residence for visiting artists and scholars from the University of Houston, or a case study for the effect of modern preservation techniques on habitability.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2278357 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/lundy-house-texas-preservation_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Victor Lundy house\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>The house features modern forms with hemlock cladding<\/p>\n<p>The structure will have to be elevated if future renovation plans exceed 50 per cent of its appraised value due to its placement on the local floodplain.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution highlights how &#8220;advocacy, partnership and action can protect the places that shape our shared history and identity,&#8221; according to Preservation Houston.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We think it&#8217;s an interesting challenge and there are very interesting questions about modernism and architecture that this house embodies,&#8221; Dan Price had said in a statement to the Houston Chronicle after its sale in October.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/10\/23\/mid-century-modern-home-preservation-conservation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/mid-century-home-preservation_dezeen_2364_col_5-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"High Sunderland mid-century home preservation\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> &#8220;Mid-century homes are a labour of love&#8221; say conservation experts\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Saving the Victor Lundy House shows what&#8217;s possible when the preservation community moves quickly and speaks with one voice,&#8221; Preservation Houston Executive Director Jennifer Kapral told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once the threat became clear, Preservation Houston and our partners rallied awareness, mobilised supporters, and built a coalition committed to protecting this landmark.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thanks to generous and dedicated preservationists Carol and Dan Price, the house is now saved, a powerful reminder that Houston&#8217;s historic architecture and history can be protected when the community understands what&#8217;s at stake.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2278352 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/lundy-house-texas-preservation_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Victor Lundy House interior\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>The house was preserved through community action<\/p>\n<p>Lundy, a decorated World War II veteran who received the Purple Heart during his service, is considered one of the founders of the Sarasota School of Architecture alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/paul-rudolph\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paul Rudolph<\/a> and Ralph Twitchell.<\/p>\n<p>His contributions to the modernist movement include a pair of contrasting <a href=\"https:\/\/hartforduu.org\/about-us\/architecture-and-most-importantly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unitarian Universalist church designs in Connecticut<\/a> and several other religious commissions.<\/p>\n<p>He followed Rudolph in studying under Walter Gropius at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and was an accomplished watercolourist outside of architecture.<\/p>\n<p>The preservation of Lundy&#8217;s residence has been overshadowed slightly by the debate surrounding Houston&#8217;s 60-year-old Astrodome, the former &#8220;Eighth Wonder of the World&#8221;
