Netflix has a new chart-topping sensation \u2014 and it isn\u2019t Stranger Things. Instead, it\u2019s Sean Combs: The Reckoning, the explosive four-part documentary examining the rise and downfall of music mogul Sean \u201cDiddy\u201d Combs<\/strong>. Executive producer Curtis \u201c50 Cent\u201d Jackson<\/strong> and director Alexandria Stapleton<\/strong> are at the center of the cultural firestorm, watching the series climb to No. 1 while igniting fierce debate online.<\/p>\n

50 Cent, never one to undersell, says he saw this coming.<\/p>\n

\u201cI expected it to be No. 1,\u201d he declares. \u201cI told Alex in advance that she should prepare an awards speech\u2026 I could feel it was going to be a big success. Stapleton laughs at his confidence. \u201cI did not believe that it was going to be this crazy,\u201d she admits. \u201cHe\u2019s been the biggest champion of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their confidence paid off: The Reckoning has become one of Netflix\u2019s most-watched and most-discussed nonfiction titles of the year, thanks to its blend of music history, abuse allegations, cultural critique, and never-before-seen footage shot in the days leading up to Combs\u2019 2024 arrest.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll wear that\u201d: 50 Cent on being called “petty”<\/p>\n

Among the loudest reactions online are accusations that 50 Cent’s involvement is \u201cpetty,\u201d a continuation of his decades-long rivalry with Diddy. Rather than dodge the criticism, he leans right in.<\/p>\n

\u201cI accept that. I’ll take that. I’ll wear that,\u201d he says with a smirk. \u201cI’m fine. I have antics that I’ve become comfortable with on social media. That’s just that.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he draws a line when it comes to the idea that the series is unfairly attacking Combs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey did characterize it as a hit piece in the very beginning,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s because they didn’t get a chance to watch it when they were saying that. And then after they see it, you see everyone’s changed their mind and it becomes the number one doc.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why hip-hop stayed silent for so long<\/p>\n

One of the central questions viewers have asked is why so few people in Combs\u2019 orbit \u2014 especially high-profile musicians \u2014 have spoken publicly about the allegations.<\/p>\n

50 Cent doesn\u2019t mince words: \u201cIt’s a part of the hip-hop culture,\u201d he says. \u201cThey think that they are telling something \u2014 that you should just mind your business. If I wasn’t saying the things that you heard me say, there would be nothing being said at all. You would assume that the culture [condones] those behaviors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stapleton says the silence was rooted not just in loyalty, but in fear.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe started this before there was an indictment,\u201d she explains. \u201cPeople were really afraid\u2026 It wasn’t obvious he was going to be indicted. It wasn’t obvious he was going to have to go to jail.\u201d<\/p>\n

She says paranoia ruled the industry in those early conversations. \u201cEven talking to me or talking to 50,\u201d she says, \u201cpeople were paranoid that it could get back to Diddy and his team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fans frequently ask why certain well-known figures didn\u2019t appear on camera. Stapleton\u2019s answer is simple: the team asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you’re watching this and there’s a lot of names on social media \u2014 \u2018Where is this person?\u2019 \u2014 you can probably just assume that we reached out,\u201d she says. \u201cThey either declined or never got back to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAlex did that,\u201d he says. \u201cHer communication\u2026 made them more comfortable. A lot of times, I wouldn’t get into details with them until she had communicated with them. You don’t know what fits or how she wants to tell a story.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stapleton says the conversations ran far deeper than what made it into the finished doc.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a lot of conversations,\u201d she explains. \u201cThere’s a lot that’s not in the series\u2026 At the end of the day, we only have four hours.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even so, what is included paints a devastating portrait \u2014 especially moments like Aubrey O\u2019Day<\/strong> confronting an allegation about herself she didn\u2019t even remember.<\/p>\n

Inside the juror backlash: \u201cThis is how our legal system works\u201d<\/p>\n

Two jurors from Combs\u2019 federal case appear in the documentary, offering rare insight into their deliberations. Their comments, however, have drawn intense criticism.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know the interviews are not sitting so well with a lot of people,\u201d Stapleton acknowledges. \u201cBut our job was to show how the legal system works in matters of sexual assault \u2014 and how complicated it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

One juror stunned viewers by saying she believed Combs \u201ccould be violent,\u201d but that wasn\u2019t part of the charges.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn a technicality, she is correct,\u201d Stapleton says. \u201cCoercion becomes very nebulous\u2026 We were presenting our legal system at play and how it worked out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tracing the rise and fall: music, power, and contradictions<\/p>\n

The Reckoning also dives into Combs\u2019 musical legacy, the East Coast\u2013West Coast rivalry, and the lingering questions around the deaths of Tupac Shakur<\/strong> and The Notorious B.I.G.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI have a record \u2014 I rapped about that in 2006,\u201d 50 says. \u201cThere\u2019s a difference between what they\u2019ll say to each other and what they’d say publicly. At this point it’s common knowledge. It was okay to explore those areas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stapleton emphasizes the importance of grounding explosive allegations in documented evidence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith Duane ‘Keefe D’ Davis<\/strong><\/strong>, he is telling you the story of Tupac,\u201d she notes. \u201cIt’s him telling the story of all of these meetings that he had with Diddy from his perspective. It felt very important to let those tapes play because they’re from law enforcement. He\u2019s currently incarcerated awaiting trial for that murder. That\u2019s what we are presenting \u2014 not our own conclusions.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of her biggest takeaways? The clarity of the timeline.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes there’s nothing better than a great timeline when you’re making a doc,\u201d she says. \u201cTo show what was happening behind closed doors versus what he was projecting to the world \u2014 it’s jaw-dropping.\u201d<\/p>\n

Awards, success, and what’s next<\/p>\n

When discussing the massive success of his Power franchise and the numerous documentaries he\u2019s produced, 50 Cent has a theory about why he hasn\u2019t been part of the mainstream awards conversation \u2014 despite already holding an Emmy as part of “The Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show.”<\/p>\n

\u201cThey haven’t seen me on a global platform outdoing Stranger Things,\u201d he says. \u201cThey\u2019ll be around this time.\u201d<\/p>\n
