NEW YORK (PIX11) \u2013 HIV cases are rising in New York City, according to a report by the NYC Department of Health. The study states these new cases disproportionately impact Black and Latino communities.<\/p>\n
The study released Monday reports 1,791 new diagnoses were made in 2024, with 86% involving Black or Latino individuals. Additionally, new diagnoses in the city have either increased or remained stable for the fourth consecutive year, unlike a decline in new cases that was seen before 2020, the study reported.<\/p>\n

Yet this progress has stalled as new diagnoses have increased or remained stable for the fourth year in a row, while life-saving federal funding for ending the epidemic is in jeopardy,\u201d said Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Morse.<\/p>\n The new report shows an increase in HIV <\/a>diagnoses as the federal government proposes shutting the CDC\u2019s Division of HIV Prevention and cutting $755.6 million in HIV prevention funding.<\/p>\n If enacted, NYC would lose over $41 million used to identify new HIV cases.<\/p>\n Poor communities<\/p>\n The HIV surveillance report also highlighted ongoing racial and ethnic disparities in new HIV diagnoses. This is likely caused by systemic factors such as poverty, housing, and healthcare inequities, the report noted.<\/p>\n HIV impacts residents in neighborhoods with higher poverty levels, with 42% of new HIV diagnoses occurring in poverty-stricken areas.
