There were 34 attendees signed up to speak in support of the anti-discrimination ordinance and 11 against. <\/p>\n<p>Christine Vo \/ Staff Photographer<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The audience was told that 78 non-speakers had expressed support for reinstatement while six opposed it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The speakers in support of reinstatement emphasized that Arlington residents are stronger together and the city will only be a community if everyone is accepted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThis is our lives on the line, and I don\u2019t want to have to leave my home and everything I love,\u201d Arlington resident Keegan Dees said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cIf we deny someone protection based on who they love and identify as, we are harming them,\u201d Arlington resident Philip Lupo told the council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The opposition speakers suggested changing the verbiage of the ordinance or removing the ordinance altogether in order to comply with federal and state laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cI hear the pain and the passion in the proponents of this reinstatement,\u201d one of the speakers said. \u201cBut I believe that none of this ordinance would change the federal programs. The vote failed 5-4. <\/p>\n<p>Christine Vo \/ Staff Photographer<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Mayor Ross gave each council member a moment to speak before the formal vote took place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cNo matter how this vote goes, there is no state, federal or municipal law that will change who we are and how we treat each other,\u201d Galante said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWe care, and we want the best for the city,\u201d Hunter said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Some council members still urged unity despite the divide on the controversial issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cRegardless of how the vote turns out tonight, we aren\u2019t going to discriminate against anyone, because discrimination is wrong,\u201d Pham said. \u201cI love you guys. We\u2019re better together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The vote comes after months of debate, two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/15\/arlington-council-delays-vote-on-whether-to-remove-lgbtq-protections\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/15\/arlington-council-delays-vote-on-whether-to-remove-lgbtq-protections\/\">vote delays<\/a> and pleas from the region\u2019s LGBTQ community and civil rights advocates to preserve the protections. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/arlington\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/arlington\/\" target=\"_blank\">Arlington<\/a> is one of the first U.S. cities to repeal its protections for LGBTQ residents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The vote to remove \u201csexual orientation\u201d and \u201cgender identity and expression\u201d from the anti-discrimination ordinance is in place, effective immediately and until further notice. Rua said they are scared they will no longer be safe at school as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. <\/p>\n<p>Christine Vo \/ Staff Photographer<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">City officials<b> <\/b>have said Arlington risked losing $65 million in federal funding if it did not amend the ordinance, citing President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s pledge to withhold federal funding from cities with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/08\/06\/dallas-stops-programs-policies-aimed-at-promoting-dei\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/08\/06\/dallas-stops-programs-policies-aimed-at-promoting-dei\/\" target=\"_blank\">diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, programs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Community leaders disputed the city\u2019s characterization of Trump\u2019s order at prior council meetings, arguing that an anti-discrimination ordinance is not the same as DEI programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">More than 20 states and nearly 400 cities across the country have policies banning discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lgbtmap.org\/equality-maps\/non_discrimination_ordinances\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.lgbtmap.org\/equality-maps\/non_discrimination_ordinances\" target=\"_blank\">Movement Advancement Project<\/a>, a nonprofit research organization that tracks legislation related to LGBTQ issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">In Texas, roughly 14% of LGBTQ residents live in a city with such protections, the nonprofit says. Dallas, Fort Worth and Plano include LGBTQ residents in their anti-discrimination ordinances. Arlington added the protection in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThis has not been easy.
