Dawson would score the next two baskets for the Lady Techsters and Grambling State would answer each, tying the game three times in the quarter. The lead never stretched beyond four for LA Tech and Shaniah Nunn’s layup would close it to 1 closing the quarter, 16-15 Lady Techsters. Dawson paced the squad with eight points and four rebounds, all coming on the offensive end. All of Louisiana Tech’s field goals came from the paint.

Louisiana Tech broke through offensively in the second quarter. After giving up the first basket to another Nunn layup, the Lady Techsters would score the next 12 points, capped off by Jianna Morris hitting from three. The Tigers had no answer in the second, allowing the lead to balloon as high as 18 after a Paris Bradley layup. Entering halftime, the Lady Techsters led 40-25, fueled by eight assists, four coming from Bradley. Six different players for LA Tech scored, shooting 57.1 percent in the quarter.

Jianna Morris started the third quarter with her third three-ball of the game, marking the fourth time she has made three in a game this season. The Tigers full court pressure cranked up the heat in the third, allowing GSU to slowly trim at the LA Tech lead. It whittled down as low as eight before a Joy Madison-Key and-one layup would give the Lady Techsters a 54-43 advantage after 30 minutes. The Tiger defense forced eight turnovers in the frame, scoring nine points with them.

Grambling State continued to fight, forcing the Lady Techsters’ lead down to six two separate times. LA Tech’s defense would answer, however, not allowing a Tiger basket for over six minutes until a Monica Marsh three-pointer finally broke the drought with 13 seconds left. Paris Bradley’s spin-move layup would secure her 10th game of double-digit scoring in a row, capping an 8-0 Lady Techsters run to help ultimately seal the game 74-60. The Tigers would score 10 of their 17 fourth quarter points from the free throw line, only making three baskets on 17 attempts.

Jordan Marshall scored her third 20-point game this season, leading the team in scoring. Hillary Dawson grabbed a team high nine rebounds, setting a new career high. We gave up too many offensive rebounds and we have to be more physical on our box outs to pursue the basketball. We cannot let teams hang around by giving up offensive rebounds and turning the ball over at the rate we did in the second half tonight. We knew that Grambling would be physical and aggressive. Give them credit for their tenacity on the boards and in their press. I was disappointed in our lack of execution in those areas.

We will watch the film and continue to teach and learn from these experiences. Every practice is an opportunity to impact our group. That does not have to come from scoring. I have to get this group to understand we need all 11 players to show up and compete every rep in practice in order for our group to be at its best. Again, I am happy we won the game, but I am more concerned with if we are competing and executing to our standard.

NOTABLES

Jordan Marshall scored 20 points for the third time this season and the fourth time in her career.

Hillary Dawson set new career highs with nine rebounds and seven offensive rebounds.

Joy Madison-Key and Paris Bradley led the team with six assists apiece, setting season highs for both.

The Lady Techsters scored 42 points in the paint, the totaling the third most on the year.

Louisiana Tech remains undefeated at home, having won eight straight games in the Thomas Assembly Center.

Jianna Morris made four three pointers in the match, the third time she has made at least four.

Morris has made a three pointer in every game this season, the only member of the team to do so.

Paris Bradley’s 11 points stretches her double-figure scoring streak to double-figures, marking the 10th time in a row, dating back to last season.
