{"id":437513,"date":"2025-12-10T09:17:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T09:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/437513\/"},"modified":"2025-12-10T09:17:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T09:17:10","slug":"maria-corina-machado-will-not-attend-peace-price-ceremony-nbc-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/437513\/","title":{"rendered":"Mar\u00eda Corina Machado will not attend Peace Price ceremony \u2013 NBC New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The head of the Norwegian Nobel Institute said Peace Prize winner Mar\u00eda Corina Machado will not attend the awards ceremony in Oslo on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Institute director Kristian Berg Harpviken told public broadcaster NRK the Venezuelan opposition leader was not in the Norwegian capital on the day of the ceremony and her daughter will accept the prize on Machado\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n<p>The institute did not immediately respond to emails or calls from The Associated Press seeking comment.<\/p>\n<p>A day earlier, a news conference that Machado was expected to attend was canceled. She last appeared in public 11 months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Machado went into hiding and has not been seen in public since Jan. 9, when she was briefly detained after joining supporters in a protest in Caracas, Venezuela\u2019s capital. <\/p>\n<p>The 58-year-old\u2019s win for her struggle to achieve a democratic transition in her South American nation was announced on Oct. 10, and she was described as a woman \u201cwho keeps the flame of democracy burning amid a growing darkness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Machado won an opposition primary election and intended to challenge President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro in last year\u2019s presidential election, but the government barred her from running for office. Retired diplomat Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez took her place. <\/p>\n<p>The lead-up to the July 28, 2024 election saw widespread repression, including disqualifications, arrests and human rights violations.
