{"id":438283,"date":"2025-12-10T17:11:22","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T17:11:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/438283\/"},"modified":"2025-12-10T17:11:22","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T17:11:22","slug":"cottesloe-beach-seal-jumps-in-to-shark-net-and-rips-apart-suspected-sting-ray-in-front-of-swimmer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/438283\/","title":{"rendered":"Cottesloe beach: Seal jumps in to shark net and rips apart suspected sting ray in front of swimmer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">A swimmer who thought they were safely inside the Cottesloe shark net got the shock of their life as a dark shape rushed toward them on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Harry Reiffer shared the wild footage on social media of the serene water becoming rippled as a seal swam close to the surface then leaps out inside the shark net close to swimmers to the right hand side of the iconic pylon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">In the video, the seal breaks the surface of the water twice and appears to be chasing something. It then zooms in to show the seal wrestling with a creature \u2014 that isn\u2019t clearly identifiable \u2014 as a curious swimmer in a white cap looks on, completely unfazed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Mr Reiffer explained what he believes to have happened in the caption of his video.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cBit of excitement at Sea World Cottesloe this morning. Beach goers watch as a seal jumped into the shark net and tore apart a stingray in front of a swimmer,\u201d the caption read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">He added that the swimmer didn\u2019t seem bothered by the altercation, and remarked that perhaps the seal was taking revenge for the death of the late Steve Irwin, who was killed by a stingray injury while filming a documentary in 2006.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThe swimmer didn\u2019t seem all that concerned watching the seal take revenge for Steve Irwin,\u201d Mr Reiffer said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The animal activity inside the shark net follows a shocking incident earlier in the year when a shark became trapped inside the Cottesloe barrier meant to protect swimmers from sea life.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/c5ca27b8b512a7b41fa120f823b05f6c60ddfd02.jpg\" alt=\"A swimmer who thought they were safely inside the Cottesloe shark net got the shock of their life as a dark shape rushed toward them on Tuesday morning.\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconA swimmer who thought they were safely inside the Cottesloe shark net got the shock of their life as a dark shape rushed toward them on Tuesday morning. Credit: @harry_reiffer<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">On January 8, swimmers were ordered out of the water at Cottesloe beach after a 1.5m bronze whaler was spotted circling inside the shark net.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cSLS Lifesavers report 1.5m bronze whaler shark sighted at 07:41hrs 08\/01, Cottesloe Beach Enclosure, Perth Metro. 60m offshore.
