A draft environmental impact statement has been filed with the state Office of Planning and Sustainable Development<\/a> for a now scaled-back M\u0101kena Mauka master-planned community project in South Maui<\/a>.<\/p>\n The proposal seeks to develop a\u00a0low-density residential community\u00a0offering a mix of market-rate and workforce housing on lands mauka of Makena Alanui Road. According to the draft statement, the plan calls for building\u00a0652 homes, including\u00a0109 onsite residential workforce housing units\u2014a reduction from the 900 units proposed in an earlier environmental impact statement preparation notice.<\/p>\n The community is designed to include\u00a0rural and single-family lots\u00a0as well as\u00a0single-family and multifamily units, alongside recreational and support amenities. The project area also encompasses the\u00a0existing M\u0101kena North Golf Course\u00a0and the\u00a0M\u0101kena South Golf Course, which is slated for renovation.<\/p>\n ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><\/p>\n Approximately\u00a0135,000 square feet\u00a0of operational support buildings are planned, including golf maintenance and operations areas, staff offices, restaurants and other uses.<\/p>\n Plans also call for a\u00a0community gathering place,\u00a0hiking trails,\u00a0walking, bicycling, and golf cart paths,\u00a0public beach parking, and\u00a0areas designated for open space, conservation, and beach access. Connectivity programs and public access improvements are included in the master plan.<\/p>\n The\u00a045-day public review and comment period\u00a0for the draft environmental impact statement is open through\u00a0Jan. 22.
