Followers of Dwight and Sheila Greene\u2019s new \u201cAll Over the World with Dwight and Sheila<\/a>\u201d Facebook vlog might be easily confused into thinking the Fort Worth couple is on nonstop vacation.<\/p>\n

The Greenes, a Fort Worth couple who met at TCU, are parlaying their yearslong wanderlust into a social media enterprise. Dwight Greene \u2014 a sometime-actor, movie maker<\/a> and entrepreneur who also spent years as a newspaper obituary writer and funeral home office supervisor \u2014 retired in February last year from the funeral job. In March, the couple started \u201cAll Over the World with Dwight and Sheila.\u201d They followed that up with an Instagram account and are looking for other ways to monetize the business while seemingly always on the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been in the death trade for too long,\u201d Dwight Greene said in an interview at the couple\u2019s home between trips. \u201cThe stats say you\u2019re not going to live past 70.\u201d<\/p>\n

That might be slightly pessimistic. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, American men live an average 75.8 years, and women live an average 81.1<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In any case, \u201cI said nobody knows when they\u2019re going to die,\u201d he said. \u201cWe might have 10 years of mobility and health left.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, two days after the Greenes posted a video of themselves this spring showing off the fitness center aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey<\/a> cruise ship, one of numerous clips they published from a weeklong trip on the liner that markets itself as the world\u2019s first \u201ccontinual world cruise,\u201d they reappeared at DFW Airport in another short.<\/p>\n

This time, Dwight Greene brandished a passport<\/a> and boarding pass as he perambulated the terminal to the strains of Herb Alpert\u2019s \u201cThe Lonely Bull,\u201d nodding at imaginary off-screen characters in a clip headlined, \u201cI always get a hero\u2019s welcome whenever I return to DFW.\u201d<\/p>\n

In fact, the Greenes, both 63 and home for a few weeks following the cruise, were at DFW beginning their next adventure: a six-week jaunt through Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When Dwight Greene retired from producing what he estimates were 2,000 death certificates annually, he started his Social Security and two pensions early, piggybacked on his wife\u2019s employer health insurance, and began posting snippets from the couple\u2019s travels on his personal Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sheila Greene has taught robotics in the Northwest ISD for 20 years and \u2014 with accumulated vacation, scheduled breaks and their protracted video publishing schedule \u2014 manages to appear in the couple\u2019s adventures as if she\u2019s traveling full time. Their Facebook followers have grown to more than 2,500.<\/p>\n

\u201cTeachers \u2014 a lot of people I don\u2019t know \u2014 tell me they\u2019re following us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The Greenes aim to be substantially different than anything else in the travel vlogosphere. Their videos carry folksy unscripted narration and conversation. \u201cI never know what he\u2019s going to say,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

And unlike other travel vlogs, their clips sometimes show the couple in unexpected situations \u2014 such as a street fight in Miami<\/a> they witnessed; Dwight Greene landing in a ship\u2019s infirmary<\/a> and explaining his bill afterwards; and him wearing a vintage Versace shirt<\/a>, talking the couple\u2019s way to a table at the Versace Mansion without a reservation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not going to do what everyone else is doing,\u201d said Dwight Greene, who occasionally switches persona and impersonates<\/a> the \u201cStar Trek\u201d actor Patrick Stewart in the couple\u2019s videos.<\/p>\n

The idea for the travel channel came up after the Greenes\u2019 last of four children moved to Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one was coming for Thanksgiving dinner, and we realized our lives had changed and we could get up and go,\u201d Dwight Greene said. \u201cWe\u2019d always travelled with four people. Once we figured that out, we thought why not share this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their target viewers: \u201cWe think it\u2019s the empty nesters who are just a little nervous about going to another part of the world,\u201d Sheila Greene said. \u201cThose are people who have the money, have the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re in shape, you can do this,\u201d Dwight Greene said. \u201cWe want to tell people how to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Greenes acknowledge it\u2019ll likely be a while before the enterprise has any shot at making money.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of people say how do you do this?\u201d Dwight Greene said. \u201cDid you win the lottery? You go without (making money) for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

The couple deploys a lot of \u201ctricks\u201d to save money, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t pay top dollar,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ll pay for a cruise ship room with a balcony. Once you pay for it, all the cruise lines will give you the opportunity to make a bid for a higher room at discounted prices. You always have rooms available at every category.\u201d<\/p>\n

The couple also doesn\u2019t buy the drinks package aboard cruise ships.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you really crunch the numbers, you can\u2019t drink that much,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Other lines they have in the water: \u201cThere\u2019s opportunities out there that you\u2019ve got to be prepared to seize on,\u201d he said. The couple purchased $300 worth of Virgin travel vouchers aboard a recent cruise, and obtained $1,200 in credits in exchange.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe take advantage of offers from overbooked flights,\u201d he said. \u201cOnce we get going on this, we\u2019ll schedule our travel two years out\u201d for more savings.<\/p>\n

The couple doesn\u2019t pay for premium class air travel, he said. \u201cNot unless you give it to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

All of this differs dramatically from the days when the pair had four children at home.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were years when we didn\u2019t travel,\u201d he said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t have the money. Any place in Texas we could drive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robust social media channels make money based on numbers of subscribers and views as well as lengths of views. The Greenes have been noodling on other ways to make money, ranging from running escorted tours to establishing a premium channel that carries episodic content rather than their shorts.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve purchased a cabin aboard the Villa Vie<\/a> as a business investment.<\/p>\n

The couple hasn\u2019t received compensation from travel providers, or asked for it, Dwight Greene said, citing his newsroom background.<\/p>\n

Some cruise lines deploy brand ambassadors, and the Greenes don\u2019t rule that out.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre we going to do that?\u201d Dwight Greene said. \u201cThat remains to be seen. We are looking to make money, but the more honest you are with your audience, the more they like you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The feel of a continuous vacation isn\u2019t difficult to come by, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got a pipeline of so much material that never gets boring and never runs out,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ll do 50 30-second snippets in a day and publish them over an extended schedule. People like these short clips.\u201d<\/p>\n

The couple shoots and produces primarily using their iPhones. The clips require little, if any, editing. \u201cI carry two phones,\u201d he said. \u201cSheila carries one. No track. No mics. It\u2019s amazing what you can do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among their most popular videos so far: 3,800 views of a passenger being airlifted<\/a> from their ship; and a comedy skit Dwight Greene did. \u201cThat got 4,500 views.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s on their travel bucket lists?<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/strong>Asia is a big part of it,\u201d Dwight Greene said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMine\u2019s long,\u201d Sheila Greene said. \u201cI\u2019d also like to see Africa. Australia. New Zealand.\u201d<\/p>\n
