Australia would buy at least three Virginia-class subs from the US in the 2030s, and later build its own “AUKUS-class” subs.

Pillar II: Advanced capabilities — developing and providing joint advanced military capabilities in areas including undersea, quantum technologies, AI, advanced cyber, hypersonic weapons, electronic warfare, innovation and information sharing.

But the agreement says the US will only provide them if doing so will not degrade its own capabilities. That will require the US building the submarines almost twice as quickly as it is now, according to US projections.

Australia is providing $US3 billion ($4.5 billion) to the US to help boost its shipbuilding capacity.

Mr Marles, who visited the US’s largest military shipyard in Virginia this week, said he was confident the American submarine program was catching up and the AUKUS timelines remained achievable.

“It was a very impressive facility to see, and also gave me a sense of confidence that, as we invest into the submarine industrial base here in the United States … we are actually seeing an increase in the production rates here.”

The British shipbuilding program is also experiencing delays in both construction and maintenance, prompting a former British Navy chief to declare: “The UK is no longer capable of managing a nuclear submarine program.”

Rear Admiral Philip Mathias, the former director of nuclear policy at the British Ministry of Defence, said AUKUS should be “cancelled now”, the UK’s Telegraph newspaper reported on the weekend.

But the UK’s Secretary of State for Defence, John Healey, said Britain was “all in” on AUKUS now the US review was done.

“All three of us are now determined to reboot AUKUS with a new commitment and a new determination in particular to deliver,” he told reporters in Washington before the talks.

Inside the plan to station US subs near Perth

The head of Australia’s submarine agency says planning is so far advanced to settle the American soldiers that quarantine arrangements for their pets are underway.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth praised AUKUS as a “reflection of both Australia and the UK stepping up” to do their part for global security.

“The president loves supporting countries that step up,” Mr Hegseth said.

“You see, through AUKUS and the review that we conducted, a continued commitment to a pragmatic, practical application of hard power between our countries that reflect peace through strength.”

Mr Marles spoke to other key Trump administration figures, including Mr Trump’s deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, at the White House.

Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby, who led the AUKUS review, also took part in the trilateral talks.

The review highlighted the challenges of meeting the program’s deadlines, but its recommendations remain confidential.

The defence minister insists the AUKUS program is on track to provide Australia with nuclear-powered submarines in the…

[2
5229,38600,4740,109886,202814,50,1697,6986,84700,38603,3470,2969
0":"post-438944","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-news","8":"tag-america","9":"tag-aukus","10":"tag-australia","11":"tag-john-healey","12":"tag-ministers","13":"tag-news","14":"tag-nuclear","15":"tag-pete-hegseth","16":"tag-richard-marles","17":"tag-submarines","18":"tag-uk","19":"tag-usa
["GET
