SAN ANTONIO – Just one day after being shot in the chest in an East side standoff, a Bexar County Deputy Constable is up and walking around.<\/p>\n
Deputy Ward and other deputies with the Precinct 4 Constable’s office said training and teamwork carried them through what could’ve been a deadly situation. They couldn’t talk about the details but said they’re grateful for the support they’ve seen online.<\/p>\n
Just one day after being shot in the chest in an East side standoff, a Bexar County Deputy Constable is up and walking around.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Darell Ward is smiling and in good-spirits; sharing gratitude that he and his brothers in blue made it home after a stand-off on the east side Tuesday night.<\/p>\n
“I was just thinking, I have to \u2014 you know, help my guys [and] have their back during that situation,” Ward said.<\/p>\n
We exclusively spoke with several deputies who worked to get 49-year-old Kevin Gerber out of a unit at the Artisan on Willow Springs. Gerber reportedly shot Deputy Ward in his body armor as he served an eviction notice.<\/p>\n
“I was just so happy to know that when I saw Deputy Ward at the scene \u2014 and that he was still able to smile \u2014 I knew that yesterday was a good day,” Precinct 4 Constable Kathryn Brown said.<\/p>\n
We asked Deputy Ward how he felt when the gunfire rang out as soon as he opened the door. He said he couldn’t comment because the investigation is on-going.<\/p>\n
That split second could have ended lives.<\/p>\n
“It happens so fast you don’t really have time to be scared until afterwards,” Deputy Joshua Martinez said.<\/p>\n
All of them tell us — they’re just thankful everyone made it home safely.<\/p>\n
Constable Brown says the investigation is now in the hands of the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.<\/p>\n
At last check, Kevin Gerber has not been booked into the Bexar County jail yet.<\/p>\n
