{"id":440349,"date":"2025-12-11T15:17:25","date_gmt":"2025-12-11T15:17:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/440349\/"},"modified":"2025-12-11T15:17:25","modified_gmt":"2025-12-11T15:17:25","slug":"brooklyn-jury-weighs-charges-that-ex-ny-aide-acted-as-unregistered-chinese-agent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/440349\/","title":{"rendered":"Brooklyn jury weighs charges that ex-NY aide acted as unregistered Chinese agent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-block-key=\"k1w7o\">A former top aide to Govs. Andrew Cuomo and Kathy Hochul was China\u2019s \u201cwoman in New York state government,\u201d prosecutors said this week during the closing arguments in her criminal trial in Brooklyn federal court.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"9i4sk\">\u201cLinda Sun betrayed the state of New York to enrich herself,\u201d Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander Solomon told jurors Tuesday. \u201cShe did the bidding of the Chinese government so that she and her husband, Chris Hu, could get rich.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"ou61\">The case against Sun carries international political implications that an unregistered foreign agent worked within the offices of two Democratic governors to advance policy favorable to the Chinese government. She <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/trial-of-ex-hochul-aide-accused-of-working-for-china-set-to-begin-in-brooklyn\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">faces charges<\/a> of being an unregistered foreign agent for China, as well as wire fraud, visa fraud and money laundering. Hu faces charges of helping launder bribes through his various businesses and bank accounts. Both have pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"1sg9n\">The jury is expected to begin deliberating on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"4tjp0\">Sun\u2019s defense attorneys said the prosecution\u2019s case was no more than a \u201chodgepodge of accusations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"1u8si\">In his closing arguments, attorney Kenneth Abell compared the government\u2019s case to a \u201cmovie plot\u201d that \u201cdoesn\u2019t hold together.\u201d While he acknowledged Sun may have made some mistakes, \u201cshe did not commit a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"esnlf\">Prosecutors say Sun performed tasks in service of the Chinese government and the ruling Communist Party. They argue Sun \u201csingle-handedly\u201d blocked a meeting between Cuomo and the president of Taiwan, secretly added a Chinese official to a private government conference call, and forged Hochul\u2019s signature as part of a visa application for a visiting Chinese delegation.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"76huh\">In exchange, prosecutors say Sun received gifts like millions of dollars in secret payments and Nanjing salted ducks. Prosecutors say Hu laundered the money through his Queens lobster exporting business and routed $1.5 million in kickbacks through an account he\u2019d <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/prosecutors-grill-mother-of-ny-government-aide-accused-of-being-chinese-agent\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">set up in Sun\u2019s mother\u2019s name<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"7evih\">Prosecutors showed jurors an image of Sun\u2019s seized cellphone case, which they said illustrated her mindset. The back of the case, decorated with cartoon animals, reads \u201cGet rich, good luck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"eksc9\">Defense attorneys argued Sun\u2019s actions were in line with her job to serve as a liaison between the Asian American community and the state government. They say her advice to steer clear of issues regarding Taiwan and mainland China was consistent with U.S. foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"e4bj0\">Abell said the government did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the money flowing into Hu\u2019s lobster exporting business was related to Sun\u2019s work, rather than legitimate income.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"8n30h\">\u201cIt\u2019s not illegal to have money,\u201d Abell said. \u201cIt\u2019s not illegal to spend it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"daia2\">Abell also disputed the prosecution&#8217;s claim that Sun forged Hochul\u2019s signature on an invitation to a visiting Chinese delegation.
