Henrich<\/strong>, MD, former president of <a href=\"https:\/\/uthscsa.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UT Health San Antonio<\/a>, whose visionary leadership and unwavering compassion shaped the university for more than a decade.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-center\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/c7kNxJ0kOpVowAs82H63e0FNPVDUkjqat3bKXiXp.png\" alt=\"Whitacre_Photo_1.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"329\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The gift will advance the institution\u2019s nationally recognized expertise in metabolic health \u2014 an area of research and clinical care that includes diabetes, obesity and related conditions that profoundly affect longevity and quality of life. This investment will fuel groundbreaking discovery aimed at confronting the region\u2019s diabetes crisis, where one in six South Texans lives with the disease, and will further strengthen UT Health San Antonio\u2019s role as a leader in improving health outcomes for the communities it serves.<\/p>\n<p>An additional $2 million commitment from the Whitacres will support the <a href=\"https:\/\/klesse.utsa.edu\/#_ga=2.164558335.1336273798.1757949567-1401742785.1757949567\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Margie and Bill Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated Design<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/goutsa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UTSA Athletics<\/a>. The college will use the gift to enhance its student success initiatives and grow the Whitacre\u00a0Family Engineering and Integrated Design Student Success Center Endowment, established by the couple in 2024. UTSA Athletics will leverage the gift to meet emerging needs, from enhancing student-athlete scholarships and student services to fueling critical initiatives like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utsa.edu\/giving\/where-to-give\/bold-champions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bold Champions<\/a> campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are profoundly grateful to Ed and Linda Whitacre for their longstanding vision and support of our institution. In 2020, the Whitacres generously supported the construction of the new <a href=\"https:\/\/news.uthscsa.edu\/ut-health-san-antonio-multispecialty-and-research-hospital-dedication-ushers-in-a-place-of-firsts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital<\/a>, establishing the Ed and Linda Whitacre Clinical Diagnostic Unit, a state-of-the-art space that enhances precision care and clinical innovation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEd and Linda Whitacre are extraordinary friends of our university,\u201d said <strong>Francisco Cigarroa<\/strong>, MD, senior executive vice president for Health Affairs and Health System. \u201cTheir generosity strengthens us in the most meaningful ways including advancing how we care for patients, enriching how we educate future health professionals, and accelerating discoveries that bring hope to families across South Texas. Their gift toward metabolic health research is a visionary extension of their commitment to improving lives through science, compassion and exceptional quality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/endocrinology\/team-member\/carolina-solis-herrera-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Carolina Solis-Herrera<\/strong><\/a>, MD, Division Chief of <a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/endocrinology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Endocrinology<\/a>, serves as the founding director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/center-excellence-diabetes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Excellence in Diabetes<\/a> and will also serve as the inaugural Ed and Linda Whitacre Distinguished Endowed University Chair for Endocrinology, Diabetes Care and Research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are profoundly grateful to Edward and Linda Whitacre for their loving, heartfelt and unwavering belief in our mission,\u201d she said. \u201cThis remarkable seeding gift fuels our determination to push the boundaries of discovery \u2014 to pursue bold, innovative therapies and ultimately a cure for diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>At a time when Texas faces some of the highest diabetes rates in the nation, their transformative generosity empowers us to bring hope, healing and life-changing progress to the countless families and communities who need it most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Whitacres\u2019 support of academics and athletics have also had a lasting impact. In 2013, they created the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. Chair in Mechanics and supported major athletics facilities improvements. The couple made another critical contribution in 2019 that enabled the Klesse College to purchase a metal 3D printer for its Makerspace. Later that year, they committed a gift toward the construction of the Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence. And in 2023, they established the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utsa.edu\/2023\/11\/ed-and-linda-whitacre-give-1m-to-support-utsa-engineering-athletics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Whitacre Family Engineering and Integrated Design Student Success Center Endowment<\/a>, in addition to supporting construction for a new basketball and volleyball training center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are incredibly thankful for Ed and Linda\u2019s commitment to helping students,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Eric Brey<\/strong>, the Edward E.
