A new elf commander<\/a> just dropped in the latest chapter of Lorwyn Eclipsed\u2018s digital story<\/a>. This is not a drill: I repeat, new elf commander! Grab the dorks<\/a>, sleeve up some Forest<\/a>s (and Swamp<\/a>s), and let’s get this elfball rolling. And call up Tarantino while you’re at it because holy feet!<\/p>\n

Introducing Morcant (and Blight!)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Lorwyn Eclipsed<\/a> is already hyped up into oblivion, and each new preview that trickles in adds fuel to the fire. Just look at High Perfect Morcant<\/a>! How many buzz words can you fit on one card? We’ve got a new elf commander, proliferate commander<\/a>, -1\/-1 counter<\/a> commander, and a new Lorwyn mechanic all wrapped up in one card. <\/p>\n

\"Blight<\/p>\n

So first thing’s first: the new blight mechanic<\/strong>. Blight looks like a keyword action<\/a> that forces an opponent to put a -1\/-1 counter on a creature they control. They get to choose<\/strong>, but we can assume there will be blight effects that affect both players (maybe an over-statted creature that blights its controller every turn, for example). -1\/-1 counters were a big deal in the latter half of the original Lorwyn block<\/a>, and it looks like they’re returning in full force here. The Jund precon<\/a> from the set is also called \u201cBlight Curse\u201d, so safe to say we’ll be seeing a good bit of that.<\/p>\n

In my best Billy Mays impression: \u201cBut wait, there’s more!\u201d Morcant blights an opponent for every elf<\/a> that enters under your control, playing into that classic elfball swarming that the creature type is known for. In other words, your elves now get to act as mini removal spells<\/strong>! And if that weren’t enough, you can tap down elves to proliferate<\/a>, which means distributing more -1\/-1 counters while also enchancing any +1\/+1 counters<\/a> or loyalty counters you have laying around on your board (or poison counters<\/a>, if you’re one of those players).<\/p>\n


\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\"Lathril,<\/a><\/p>\n

That’s a lot going on for an elf commander, and the removal aspect makes it feel distinctly different from the way most existing elf decks play. Will it supplant Lathril, Blade of the Elves<\/a> as the de factor elf commander of choice? Maybe not, but you’ll be seeing these two in tandem a lot moving forward.<\/p>\n

A Smattering of Other Spoilers<\/p>\n

While High Perfect Morcant<\/a> was definitely the headliner of the article, the Lorwyn Eclipsed story also dropped a couple other spoiler cards.<\/p>\n

Perfect Intimidation<\/a> is an over-costed discard<\/a> spell (that exiles), but lets you tack on the mode of removing all counters<\/a> from a creature, presumably as a way to replenish blighted creatures you control. There might be other counter themes in the set that we don’t know of yet, but MTG rarely mingles multiple counter types in the same set<\/strong> at lower rarities.<\/p>\n


\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\"Meeting<\/a><\/p>\n

Unexpected Assistance<\/a> continues a trend of bolstering blue card draw spells<\/a>. Following up a year that gave us Cryogen Relic<\/a>, Stock Up<\/a>, Accumulate Wisdom<\/a>, Quantum Riddler<\/a>, and Consult the Star Charts<\/a>, which isn’t even a comprehensive list of great blue card draw effects from 2025, this convoke<\/a> spell looks like the appropriate power level you’d expect on a common. Meeting of Minds<\/a> was a killer draw spell in March of the Machine<\/a>, and this punches up the curve a bit for a greater effect. Note that convoke gets used pretty regularly as a cameo\/deciduous mechanic in MTG these days, so this isn’t confirmation of convoke being used as a main-set mechanic<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Lorwyn Eclipsed prereleases kick off just a little over a month from today, so stay tuned for more previews trickling in, and let’s hope some of the other Lorwyn creature types get equally powerful commanders. You’ve waited long enough, kithkin<\/a> players!<\/p>\n
