SAN ANTONIO \u2014 Starting Thursday, there’s a new update to a much-needed community resource.<\/p>\n
The Greenies Urban Farm will hold a ribbon cutting for the newest facility on San Antonio\u2019s east side.<\/p>\n
The farm provides up to 25,000 pounds a year in fresh fruits and vegetables to its surrounding community.<\/p>\n
On campus, the building will not just be event space but also serve as learning hub and community destination.<\/p>\n
The facility sits on approximately three acres of land at a cost of $13.7 million by Capital Projects Fund. It will host Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service staff and allow them to use the building for new gardens, outdoor kitchens, outdoor classrooms and greenhouses.<\/p>\n
The space will also host future farmers\u2019 markets.<\/p>\n
This comes five years after the greenies urban farm opened on the east side.<\/p>\n
The property on Sherman Street, right near the Frost Bank Center, grows free seasonal fruits and vegetables for the community and can produce up to 25,000 pounds a year.<\/p>\n
Commissioner Tommy Calvert, who is behind the urban farm, told KENS 5 about the resource.<\/p>\n
“There’s very few things that I can do, the county can do to help people with food on their table,” he said. “This is one of them. We’re going to be able to lower people’s grocery bills by giving away fresh fruits and vegetables.”<\/p>\n
