{"id":441505,"date":"2025-12-12T03:13:27","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T03:13:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/441505\/"},"modified":"2025-12-12T03:13:27","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T03:13:27","slug":"mayor-adams-may-skip-inauguration-of-nyc-mayor-elect-zohran-mamdani","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/441505\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor Adams may skip inauguration of NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mayor Adams said Thursday he is unsure whether he\u2019ll attend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/11\/04\/zohran-mamdani-elected-nyc-mayor-in-historic-defeat-of-andrew-cuomo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zohran Mamdani\u2019s inauguration<\/a> on New Year\u2019s Day, saying he\u2019s hesitant to do so because the mayor-elect\u2019s \u201cnasty\u201d supporters might use the opportunity to make a scene.<\/p>\n<p>To skip out on the swearing-in would be a break in tradition, with outgoing mayors typically attending the formal ceremony ushering in a new administration.<\/p>\n<p>Adams <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/politics\/2025\/12\/10\/mayor-adams-weighs-in-on-his-legacy--achievements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told NY1<\/a> in an interview Thursday that he possibly would skip it because Mamdani\u2019s supporters might be too raucous, slamming them as \u201cmean,\u201d \u201cnasty\u201d and \u201cdisrespectful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still deciding,\u201d he said. \u201cI want to communicate with the incoming mayor because I don\u2019t want to be disruptive of the ceremony. It\u2019s his day. Some people are perpetual protesters, some people will turn this ceremony into some form of protest. So I want to speak with him to determine if I\u2019m going to attend or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event is expected to be held at City Hall on the afternoon of Jan. 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo comment,\u201d Dora Pekec, a spokeswoman for Mamdani, said.<\/p>\n<p>Outgoing mayors have often attended the swearing-in of their successors, even amid frosty relationships and campaign trail tensions. When Mayor Bill de Blasio was sworn in in 2014, Mayor Michael Bloomberg sat through speaker after speaker\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2014\/01\/01\/speakers-blast-former-mayor-bloomberg-at-mayor-de-blasios-inauguration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admonishment of his mayoralty<\/a>. When Mayor Adams was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2022\/01\/01\/eric-adams-becomes-nycs-110th-mayor-amid-times-square-party-and-covid-surge-new-york-is-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inaugurated in Times Square<\/a> in 2022, de Blasio was in attendance, dancing with his wife onstage.<\/p>\n<p>One notable exception to the tradition happened in 1998, when former Mayors Ed Koch and David Dinkins skipped Mayor Rudy Giuliani\u2019s inauguration for a second term.<\/p>\n<p>Adams mounted an independent bid for reelection earlier this year but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/09\/28\/mayor-adams-ends-mayoral-ection-campaign-after-weeks-of-pressure-trum-business-mamdani-cuomo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dropped out of the race<\/a> in September after pressure to do so in order to clear a path for ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
