{"id":441572,"date":"2025-12-12T04:02:32","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T04:02:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/441572\/"},"modified":"2025-12-12T04:02:32","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T04:02:32","slug":"why-single-income-households-are-a-bygone-era-according-to-experts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/441572\/","title":{"rendered":"Why single-income households are &#8216;a bygone era,&#8217; according to experts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/108240212-1765399217521-251203-cg-32-single-income-thumb.png\" alt=\"Why one paycheck no longer adds up in today&#x2019;s economy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Achieving the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/04\/16\/why-a-100000-salary-no-longer-buys-the-american-dream-in-most-places.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Dream<\/a> doesn&#8217;t look the way it used to. <\/p>\n<p>Over the years, societal and labor market changes, along with higher prices for everything from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/health-and-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health care<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/college\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">higher education<\/a>, have chipped away at the traditional makeup of the American family, which relied on a singular breadwinner to attain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/personal-finance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">financial security<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>For starters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/01\/08\/share-of-us-adults-living-without-a-romantic-partner-has-ticked-down-in-recent-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fewer couples are married<\/a> compared to a generation ago and among married couples, both spouses are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/11\/03\/dual-income-no-kids-what-we-know-about-dinks-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more likely to work<\/a>, according to the Pew Research Center \u2014 by choice and necessity. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We used to be in this golden age where you could own a home, a car, and get by on a single income \u2014 that is a bygone era,&#8221; Bankrate&#8217;s economic analyst Sarah Foster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/23\/salary-needed-to-live-comfortably-in-2025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told CNBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/p>\n<p>Today, it often takes two working parents to afford a middle-class lifestyle, studies show. Even six-figure earners in the U.S. said one income feels &#8220;nearly impossible&#8221; to live on, according to a recent survey by <a href=\"https:\/\/theharrispoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Income-Paradox-Survey-November-2025.pdf#page=13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Harris Poll.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In about half of all married-couple families, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/ted\/2025\/both-spouses-employed-in-about-half-of-all-married-couple-families.htm#:~:text=In%20about%20half%20(49.6%20percent)%C2%A0of%20all%20married%2Dcouple%20families%20both%20spouses%20were%20employed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">both spouses were employed<\/a>, according to 2024 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In families with children, two-thirds of all households had<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/famee.t04.htm#:~:text=97.5-,Both%20parents%20employed,-15%2C156\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <\/a>both spouses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/famee.t04.htm#:~:text=97.5-,Both%20parents%20employed,-15%2C156\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working outside the home<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Where there was a time in the U.S. when a married couple, with children, could get by with a single-wage earner in the house, those days are mostly vestiges of the past,&#8221; according to Mark Hamrick, Bankrate&#8217;s senior economic analyst.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Household expenses have soared<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/10000793\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inflation<\/a>\u00a0and surging costs for expenses including child care, college, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/auto-loans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">auto loans<\/a>, homes\u00a0and rent have created an &#8220;affordability challenge,&#8221; Hamrick said. <\/p>\n<p>Across the country, health insurance premiums for family coverage have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/health-costs\/2025-employer-health-benefits-survey\/#55d346a7-5bff-4d99-840c-a793b6a03320:~:text=Over%20the%20last%20five%20years%2C%20the%20average%20premium%20for%20family%20coverage%20has%20increased%20by%2026%25%2C%20compared%20to%20a%2028.6%25%20increase%20in%20workers%E2%80%99%20wages%20and%20inflation%20of%2023.5%25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">jumped more than 25% since 2020, outpacing inflation<\/a>. Both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/06\/08\/childcare-social-safety-net-policy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cost of child care<\/a> and college tuition have increased more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/16\/federal-reserve-college-is-still-worth-the-investment-for-most-students.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5% year after year<\/a> over the same period, also outpacing inflation and other household expenses, research shows. <\/p>\n<p>At the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/make-it-count-measuring-our-housing-supply-shortage\/#:~:text=Our%20calculations%20show%20that%20the%20U.S.%20housing%20market%20was%20short%204.9%20million%20housing%20units%20in%202023%20relative%20to%20mid%2D2000s.%C2%A0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a housing shortfall<\/a> has <a href=\"https:\/\/zillow.mediaroom.com\/2024-06-18-The-U-S-is-now-short-4-5-million-homes-as-the-housing-deficit-grows#:~:text=The%20growing%20housing%20shortage%20is%20the%20primary%20reason%20for%20the%20affordability%20crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">helped push rents and mortgage<\/a> prices far beyond what a single earner may be able to afford. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because the costs have been rising so much for so many families, we know the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childcareaware.org\/price-landscape24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cost of child care<\/a>, the cost of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/health-costs\/2025-employer-health-benefits-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health care<\/a>, the need to be able to earn more money just to keep up, necessitated more hours per family,&#8221; said Elise Gould, senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute, a nonprofit think tank.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline1\"\/>Workplace dynamics have changed<\/p>\n<p>Significant changes in the workplace have also made it more difficult to rely on one income. &#8220;There&#8217;s been a fracturing of both job security and a sense of belonging that workers have in the workplace,&#8221; Hamrick said. <\/p>\n<p>More workers are now part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/09\/workers-cash-daily-income-needs-paycheck.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gig economy<\/a>, which means they are less likely to have a sustained, predictable income or workplace benefits, he said, eroding long-term job stability: &#8220;If you are part of the gig economy, there&#8217;s a tremendous amount of insecurity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fewer gig workers \u2014 and even full-time employees \u2014 have a traditional pension and are increasingly responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/04\/gen-x-is-facing-a-retirement-crisis-reports-show.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funding their own retirement plans<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For workers without predictable hours or benefits, even a full-time schedule isn&#8217;t enough to guarantee stable income or support a household on one paycheck,&#8221; said Scott Winship, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative public policy think tank.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline2\"\/>Increasing opportunities for women<\/p>\n<p>But there aren&#8217;t just economic pressures at play. <\/p>\n<p>The shift to dual-earner households is also a reflection of the increasing opportunities for women and the elimination of some gender barriers, according to Winship.<\/p>\n<p>Women have been making\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/03\/14\/here-are-the-barbie-jobs-that-most-real-life-women-hold-per-bls-data.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">significant strides<\/a>\u00a0in their education and careers\u00a0and are working as much, if not more, than their male counterparts, many studies also show. <\/p>\n<p>In a growing share of opposite-sex marriages,\u00a0women have become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/personal-income\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breadwinners<\/a>,\u00a0or outearn their husbands, according to the Pew Research Center.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Women have a lot more opportunities than they used to have, and so they&#8217;re working longer and they&#8217;re working for higher pay,&#8221; Winship said.
