{"id":441738,"date":"2025-12-12T05:52:14","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T05:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/441738\/"},"modified":"2025-12-12T05:52:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T05:52:14","slug":"san-antonio-acs-gets-15-3m-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/441738\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio ACS gets $15.3M expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 More than 32,000 cats and dogs were brought to Animal Care Services last year, and all of them made their way through the city\u2019s veterinary clinic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The 3,000-square-foot clinic handles vaccinations, sterilizations, emergency medical care, and other treatment. The facility is primarily for animals without a known owner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Work is set to begin, however, on a $15.3 million project to renovate the clinic and build a new veterinary hospital next door, nearly five times its size.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">ACS officials said this will allow them to provide better treatment and reduce euthanasia on campus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The San Antonio City Council unanimously passed a construction contract with F.A. Nunnelly on Thursday morning without debate. Voters previously approved the money as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/saspeakup.com\/animalcarefacilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/saspeakup.com\/animalcarefacilities\">city\u2019s 2022 bond program<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">ACS Director Jon Gary said the current clinic will be used for offices and holding space, including the department\u2019s canine parvovirus isolation ward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The new, 14,500 square foot hospital will have more space and better equipment, including an X-ray and a laboratory testing room. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cMostly what the new facility is gonna be able to do is allow us to provide better care for the animals that we have and provide better treatment options,\u201d Gary said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sa.gov\/files\/assets\/main\/v\/1\/acs\/documents\/reports\/asilomar\/asilomar-fy2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sa.gov\/files\/assets\/main\/v\/1\/acs\/documents\/reports\/asilomar\/asilomar-fy2025.pdf\"> last fiscal year<\/a>, which ended in September, ACS euthanized 749 cats and dogs for medical reasons and another 1,120 animals with medical or behavioral issues because of capacity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Gary also said there is \u201cno doubt\u201d the new veterinary hospital will help reduce how many animals are euthanized for medical reasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe\u2019re gonna have more space to provide treatment, as well as better equipment and resources inside the hospital to provide treatment,\u201d Gary said. \u201cSo it\u2019s both of those things combined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">San Antonio Pets Alive!
