I struggle with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a27243083\/smiling-depression\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a27243083\/smiling-depression\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"high-functioning depression\" data-node-id=\"0.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">high-functioning depression<\/a>, and fitness helps me push through the heaviness, regain my focus, and remind myself that I\u2019m stronger than my thoughts.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">My typical week of workouts includes a mix of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a30522035\/what-is-strength-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a30522035\/what-is-strength-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength training\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">strength training<\/a>, cardio, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a43144145\/stretching-exercises-routine\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a43144145\/stretching-exercises-routine\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"stretching\" data-node-id=\"1.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">stretching<\/a>, but sometimes my routine gets monotonous and I catch myself going through the motions. So, I decided to shake things up by wearing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/g29641621\/best-weighted-vest\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/g29641621\/best-weighted-vest\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"weighted vest\" data-node-id=\"1.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">weighted vest<\/a> during every workout for one week, which I\u2019d never tried before. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">This challenge was more than physical for me\u2014it was an opportunity to also be more present and maybe even explore how carrying a literal weight compared to carrying an invisible one.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">I never looked at the weighted vest as a miracle tool, and I wasn\u2019t expecting any wild transformation. While it\u2019s touted in the fitness industry for helping people build <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a68002478\/guide-to-exercise-for-bone-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a68002478\/guide-to-exercise-for-bone-health\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"bone density\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">bone density<\/a> and muscle, the available scientific research doesn\u2019t really back that, especially if you already work out consistently. I didn\u2019t put the vest on thinking it would change my body in a week. me. I felt like anything lighter wouldn\u2019t push my muscles enough to feel a real difference. Twenty pounds is heavy, but for my fitness level, I thought it was the sweet spot: weighty enough to make my body work harder, but still safe enough for me to move with proper form. I felt more grounded and powerful in my workouts, but also a lot more tired. Even on days that weren\u2019t core-focused, I could feel my midsection working overtime to stabilize the added weight so my lower back didn\u2019t take on the extra load and cause me pain, since I&#8217;ve had lower back issues before. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">This weighted vest experiment made me rethink what \u201ccore training\u201d actually is; it\u2019s not just isolated crunches or planks, but the way your core shows up in every movement when it\u2019s challenged properly.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"body-tip css-mtq1aa emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"16.0\">If you wear a vest, my biggest tip as a trainer is to pay attention to your form.<\/strong> If the vest makes you lose your balance, arch your back, or rush through a movement, that\u2019s a sign the vest is too heavy for that exercise. You should feel challenged, but not compromised. Also, if your form starts breaking down, it\u2019s okay to take the vest off for that movement and put it back on when you feel stable again.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"17.0\"\/>I also had to modify parts of my routine, as wearing a vest for every workout proved to be a little too intense.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">For instance, I attempted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a63321844\/weighted-vest-running\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a63321844\/weighted-vest-running\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"run with the vest\" data-node-id=\"18.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">run with the vest<\/a> early in the week, but quickly realized that 20 pounds was too heavy to maintain proper form or my usual pace. That moment really reminded me that sometimes the vest isn\u2019t the move for all forms of exercise. If the weight throws off your form, makes you feel shaky, or forces you to move in a way that doesn\u2019t feel natural, that\u2019s your sign to let it go for that workout. The goal is to train smart, not push through something that isn\u2019t serving you.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">So instead of pushing through the run and risking injury, I switched my runs to brisk walks, incline treadmill sessions, and StairMaster intervals. These workouts still challenged my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a69194162\/ways-to-build-endurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a69194162\/ways-to-build-endurance\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"endurance\" data-node-id=\"19.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">endurance<\/a>, but felt much more sustainable with the added weight.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-theme-key=\"pullquote\" class=\"css-1pxfh3s e1pe3zr91\">\n<blockquote class=\"css-sh2zho e1pe3zr90\"><p>&#8220;Sometimes the vest isn\u2019t the move for all forms of exercise.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Physically, I definitely had to step up my recovery because my workouts were much more challenging. I prioritized hitting my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/food\/a62546790\/high-protein-meal-prep-manual\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/food\/a62546790\/high-protein-meal-prep-manual\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"protein goal\" data-node-id=\"21.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">protein goal<\/a> of 150 to 180 grams of protein a day to support muscle repair and included carbs for energy, especially before workouts. I also stretched for longer and made a conscious effort to get at least seven hours of sleep every day because my body needed it. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">By the time Saturday came, I was really sore and honestly, that was the perfect reminder of just how hard I\u2019d been working all week. It shed light on my areas of improvement.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"32\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Wearing the weighted vest made me instantly aware of areas I\u2019d been overlooking\u2014even exercises I\u2019ve done a thousand times like squats, lunges, and planks felt way harder. (I realized that sometimes less is more when it comes to core work!) Under the added resistance, I learned to keep my core engaged more consistently, keep better balance, and maintain sharper form.
