\u201cIt is demonstrating a kind of new campaign style, where you speak as verbosely as possible, where you demean your opponents as much as you can, and Donald Trump invented this,\u201d Paterson said.<\/p>\n

Though Paterson acknowledged that Trump\u2019s \u201cpolitical ideology is the polar opposite\u201d of Mamdani\u2019s\u2014Mamdani is a self-avowed democratic socialist\u2014he said that there are undeniable similarities between the two. <\/p>\n
He cited, for example, \u201cthe support that Mamdani is receiving and the continuation of it, the number of people he\u2019s registering, and the number of people that go to his rallies.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I blinked my eyes, ten years ago, there was another person who was able to do that, and his name is Donald Trump,\u201d Paterson said.<\/p>\n
Like Trump, Mamdani does not shy away from going after his opponents. During the mayoral debate, Mamdani told<\/a> challenger and former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo that he \u201cnever had to resign in disgrace,\u201d referring to Cuomo being forced to step down<\/a> as governor in 2021 following multiple sexual assault allegations. <\/p>\n Patterson recalled Trump\u2019s feud with the late Sen. John McCain of Arizona. In the lead-up to the 2016 election, Trump claimed that the late Senator was \u201cnot a war hero.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHe was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren\u2019t captured,\u201d Trump said at the time. <\/p>\n \u201cTrump somehow turned that into a situation where a lot of people supported him,\u201d Paterson remarked. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t know to what extent Mamdani is going to attack his opponents in this general election, but it gives him a real plurality now that\u2019s going to be hard to beat.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump has also threatened<\/a> to deport Mamdani, whom he\u2019s dubbed a communist \u201cnutjob<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cFrankly, I\u2019ve heard he\u2019s a total nut job,\u201d Trump told reporters on July 1. \u201cI think the people in New York are crazy if they go this route, I think they\u2019re crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n Paterson revealed that he endorsed former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the mayoral primary but admitted that he realized just \u201ca few days ago\u201d how \u201cdifficult\u201d it would be to beat Mamdani.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t want to jump ship, but you know \u2026\u201d Paterson said.<\/p>\n Mamdani bested Cuomo in the Democratic primary in June with 43.5 percent of the vote to Cuomo\u2019s 36.4 percent. <\/p>\n The disgraced former governor of New York ultimately decided to concede defeat, saying that Mamdani \u201cdeserved it.\u201d<\/p>\n Yet Cuomo has said that he might still remain in the mayoral race by running as an independent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Former New York Gov.
