Kim Klement Neitzel \/ USA Today<\/p>\n<p>Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson apologized for using a homophobic phrase on the \u201cThursday Night Football Nightcap\u201d show following Atlanta\u2019s 29-28 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.<\/p>\n<p>When Robinson joined the show, analyst Richard Sherman pointed to a standout play from the running back and said his ability to maneuver around tackles reminded him of backyard football.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had a play where they threw it to you, Bijan,\u201d Sherman said. \u201cThey threw it to you in the backfield, you made the first one miss, then legged three people. And I said, \u2018This boy grew up in the backyard.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robinson seemed to understand the sentiment. However, he used a derogatory term associated with an informal \u201ckeep-away\u201d game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmear the queer, that\u2019s what we do,\u201d Robinson said.<\/p>\n<p>As soon as Robinson said the phrase, the broadcast referred to the game instead as \u201ckill the carrier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robinson later apologized on social media for using the slur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to apologize for the insensitive comment I made in the broadcast,\u201d he wrote on X. \u201cIt was a football game we used to play as a kid but that\u2019s not an excuse. I recognize the mistake and make sure to do better in the future. Robinson finished with 175 total yards, including eight catches for 82 yards.
