He cancelled a visit to the White House in February after Mr Trump announced his intention to resettle Gaza&#8217;s residents in Egypt and Jordan and turn the coastal territory into a resort. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-3-LXBXO6J64NBMFCUISSFWIYERFU\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/egypt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/egypt\">Egypt<\/a> strongly rejected the plan, arguing that it undermined its national security, but relations between Cairo and Washington have improved significantly since then. Mr Trump visited Egypt in November to announce a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/10\/14\/full-text-of-trump-peace-agreement-signed-by-leaders-of-us-egypt-qatar-and-turkey-in-sharm-el-sheikh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/10\/14\/full-text-of-trump-peace-agreement-signed-by-leaders-of-us-egypt-qatar-and-turkey-in-sharm-el-sheikh\/\">Gaza peace plan<\/a> and mark the start of a ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-4-BBKCWCTG4NDEVK6ES2PDCYT72E\">The sources, who were briefed on the preparations for Mr El Sisi&#8217;s visit, did not give a precise date for the Egyptian leader&#8217;s trip or its duration. They said a meeting between the Egyptian leader and Israeli Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/benjamin-netanyahu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/benjamin-netanyahu\">Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a>, hosted by Mr Trump, was being considered. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-5-4BRJPF5ROFDZZJXAJLVTAE2ONU\">US officials did not immediately respond to The National&#8217;s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-7-C3RD7EF2Y5FWLG6WO2WRBIXYKI\">The Axios news outlet reported earlier this month that the US President was trying to broker a meeting between Mr El Sisi and Mr Netanyahu. The Israeli Prime Minister is due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/12\/09\/donald-trump-to-host-benjamin-netanyahu-on-december-29-to-discuss-advancing-gaza-ceasefire-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/12\/09\/donald-trump-to-host-benjamin-netanyahu-on-december-29-to-discuss-advancing-gaza-ceasefire-plan\/\">meet Mr Trump<\/a> on December 29, during an eight-day visit to the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-8-FXQDFRGD4ZGNVBU4S7DJDRJS3U\">\u201cContacts between Cairo and Washington are continuing to iron out the visit&#8217;s agenda,\u201d said one of the sources. \u201cEgyptian officials have travelled to Washington for meetings with Trump administration officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-SUYRMIRZSRACBOWXOEZHPG7EKA\">\u201cEgypt wants to make sure that agreements, or at least common ground, are found ahead of the visit.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-MPV7JH25LJETDNDNMRC54Y24QA\">Mr El Sisi and Mr Netanyahu are not known to have met or spoken since the Gaza war broke out in October 2023. Relations between the two Middle Eastern neighbours, bound by a US-sponsored peace treaty, have become strained amid the conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-11-TQIWHWKCPFA6XJZF4SIT3MDF64\">The sources said Mr El Sisi would discuss with Mr Trump the implementation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/12\/05\/rising-fears-in-gaza-over-lack-of-progress-on-ceasefires-second-stage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/12\/05\/rising-fears-in-gaza-over-lack-of-progress-on-ceasefires-second-stage\/\">second phase<\/a> of the US leader&#8217;s Gaza peace plan and sound him out on the need to introduce \u201camendments\u201d to the 1979 Egypt-Israel treaty, to reflect what they called recent geopolitical changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-QCBRAZC4VBHYVJQOZUU2EGZDMI\">Cairo is primarily seeking to relax restrictions stipulated in the treaty on the number of service members and type of weapons it can deploy in Zone C \u2013 the part of the Sinai Peninsula abutting Israel, the sources said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-3F47TMPOPVD6XGLLYQFXLKYGSM\">They gave no details or explanation as to why Egypt wants these amendments. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-KIEAHS37ERAALLRWQB5NRUHITU\">Under the treaty&#8217;s provisions, Egypt is only allowed to deploy border police equipped with firearms in the area. However, Israel allowed Egypt to bring troops and heavy weapons there to fight against an insurgency by Islamist extremists in the 2010s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-4TSKPRRH7NEM7F5GBNGNYB4VCM\">Egypt stepped up its military presence in the area after Israel seized the Palestinian side of a strip running the length of Egypt&#8217;s border with Gaza and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/2025\/12\/05\/eight-countries-including-uae-condemn-israeli-plan-to-open-rafah-as-one-way-exit-from-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/2025\/12\/05\/eight-countries-including-uae-condemn-israeli-plan-to-open-rafah-as-one-way-exit-from-gaza\/\">Rafah crossing<\/a> in May last year. The crossing with Egypt was the only gateway in and out of the territory not controlled by Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-17-5IJLFBWQ5FGOFF2SLB2AQAW55Y\">Egypt reacted angrily to both moves, increasing the tension between the two nations, which fought four full-fledged wars between 1948 and the end of 1973. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-18-EZL2G35TGFFBLMYF4T4TMWBEUU\">Egypt&#8217;s latest troop reinforcements in Sinai are widely believed to have taken place without Israel&#8217;s explicit approval, prompting right-wing politicians and analysts in Israel to warn that Egypt is readying to go to war against Israel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-19-JXB2I4HEKFC4TLSRBKLX5PUATM\">But Mr El Sisi has issued assurances over the past year that the peace treaty with Israel remains a cornerstone of Egypt&#8217;s foreign policy and regional stability. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-20-CHCV5E3I2RESZESK3YGAITDSYY\">However, the Gaza war and talk about a possible war with Israel have revived criticism in Egypt of the treaty&#8217;s provisions on the presence of troops in Sinai, with some describing them as compromising the nation&#8217;s sovereignty over its territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-21-IZU2VGB4LRE6RPG6VR6T6OJAZE\">Another topic Mr El Sisi is likely to raise with Mr Trump, according to the sources, is Cairo&#8217;s need for the American leader to persuade Mr Netanyahu to quickly approve a strategic, multibillion-dollar deal under which Israel will provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/energy\/2025\/08\/07\/egypt-signs-35bn-deal-to-import-natural-gas-from-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/energy\/2025\/08\/07\/egypt-signs-35bn-deal-to-import-natural-gas-from-israel\/\">natural gas<\/a> to Egypt to liquefy and export. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-22-6JFOZTBCEFDD3HSJ2MUEZL3CBA\">Media reports have suggested that Mr Netanyahu wanted to announce his ratification of the deal during a meeting with the Egyptian leader, something that he could use as evidence of a return to normality in Israel&#8217;s relations with Cairo after a period of unprecedented tension. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-23-UNV26EDQYBB4FBWUHWNOP4BM2U\">Separately, Mr El Sisi will ask Mr Trump to become directly involved in resolving Egypt&#8217;s long-running dispute with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/ethiopia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/ethiopia\">Ethiopia<\/a> over the latter&#8217;s construction of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/09\/09\/ethiopia-celebrates-opening-of-nile-megadam-as-egypt-protests-to-un\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/09\/09\/ethiopia-celebrates-opening-of-nile-megadam-as-egypt-protests-to-un\/\">massive Nile dam<\/a> that Cairo sees as a threat to its vital share of the river&#8217;s water, the sources said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-24-LGP5K55J3NDMZLBMHUFC23K43Q\">They said Egypt wants Mr Trump to persuade Ethiopia that the dam should be run jointly by experts from all 11 Nile Basin nations, along with representatives from the African Union.
