{"id":443441,"date":"2025-12-13T01:02:12","date_gmt":"2025-12-13T01:02:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/443441\/"},"modified":"2025-12-13T01:02:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T01:02:12","slug":"usta-near-deal-for-australian-open-boss-craig-tiely-to-be-new-ceo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/443441\/","title":{"rendered":"USTA Near Deal for Australian Open Boss Craig Tiely to Be New CEO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley is in advanced talks to become the next CEO of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/usta\/\" id=\"auto-tag_usta_1\" data-tag=\"usta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USTA<\/a>, according to multiple people with knowledge of the talks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA lifelong tennis player, coach and executive, Tiley has been the tournament director for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/australian-open\/\" id=\"auto-tag_australian-open_1\" data-tag=\"australian-open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australian Open<\/a> since 2006 and has run the Australian tennis governing body since 2013. That experience dovetails with the setup at the USTA, which owns and operates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/u-s-open\/\" id=\"auto-tag_u-s-open_1\" data-tag=\"u-s-open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Open<\/a>, the tennis season\u2019s fourth and final Grand Slam. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTiley was chosen following a roughly six-month process, said the people, who were granted anonymity because the details are private. The USTA\u2019s leadership vacancy came at a potential pivotal time for global tennis, with potential changes underway regarding labor, investment and consolidation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShould he sign a contract in the next few weeks, it\u2019s unclear if he would stay on in his current job through the Australian Open, which runs from Jan. 12 to Feb. 1 in Melbourne. Attempts to reach Tiley via email and LinkedIn weren\u2019t returned; a representative for Elevate, which was retained in July to run the process, declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhile we do not have any news to share at this time,\u201d the USTA said in a statement, \u201cwe are confident that our next CEO will continue to build on the USTA\u2019s long-standing commitment to growing the game of tennis in communities across the United States and elevating the U.S. Open as the biggest stage for our sport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe U.S. governing body has been run by two interim co-CEOs\u2014board chairman Brian Vahaly and COO Andrea Hirsch\u2014since former CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/lew-sherr\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lew-sherr_1\" data-tag=\"lew-sherr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lew Sherr<\/a> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/leagues\/baseball\/2025\/mets-hire-lew-sherr-from-usta-in-latest-shakeup-1234854512\/\">left to join<\/a> the New York Mets earlier this year. Elevate ran the process alongside a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oneelevate.com\/article\/usta-taps-elevate-talent-to-lead-ceo-search\">search committee<\/a> that included Vahaly, Hirsch and a handful of other USTA board members.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-sportico-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/6q9yS-the-usta-is-growing-more-reliant-on-the-u-s-open-3.png\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"908\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSherr earned more than $1.5 million from the USTA in fiscal 2023, according to the group\u2019s most recent available tax return. For fiscal 2024, the USTA reported record <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/business\/finance\/2025\/usta-us-open-finances-revenue-2025-1234868299\/\">$623.8 million<\/a> in revenue. Tennis Australia, by contrast, reported about <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/content\/dam\/tennisaustralia\/documents\/reports\/annual-reports\/tennis-australia-annual-report-2023-2024.pdf.coredownload.pdf\">$393.2 million<\/a> ($590.5 million AUS) in its 2024 fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAbout 90% of that USTA revenue comes from the U.S. Open. The three-week tournament accounted for $559.6 million in revenue and $282.2 million in event expenses, according to audited financials, implying an operating profit of about $277.4 million. Those funds are used to fund other USTA endeavors, such as amateur tournaments, coaching workshops and development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEarlier this year the group also announced an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/leagues\/tennis\/2025\/usta-renovation-billie-jean-king-center-us-open-1234852959\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$800 million<\/a> overhaul of the U.S. Open\u2019s New York City venue, which will be funded via cash reserves and debt. In November it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usta.com\/en\/home\/stay-current\/national\/eric-butorac-named-us-open-tournament-director.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">announced<\/a> that Eric Butorac would be its next U.S. Open tournament director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA native South African, Tiley joined Tennis Australia in 2005 as director of tennis. He has been Australian Open tournament director since 2006, and took over as CEO in 2013.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBefore joining Tennis Australia, he was head tennis coach at the University of Illinois. He led the Fighting Illini to the NCAA title in 2003 and six Big Ten tournament titles. He was inducted into the school\u2019s athletics <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fightingillini.com\/honors\/hall-of-fame\/craig-tiley\/73\">Hall of Fame<\/a> in 2017.
